Security - November 2006

I work in IT at my job, and while watching internet usage, akamai.net seems to show up when usage that looks like spam is being logged through the server. I went to log into my yahoo email account, and akamai.net showed up again, I am more worried about phishing.

I was supposed to make a recovery disk for my friends laptop but mistakenly I clicked PC recovery and just recentle she have intalled a Norton Antivirus from a CD which she purchased. She tried to reinstall it but the CD is no longer working because it was already used. Will she be able to recover her Norton Antivirus for her laptop without buying new.

Whenever I right-click on a folder and click "Sharing and Security" the option to make the folder private appears gray (blocked). All my drives have the NTFS file system and I am the administrator with only the guest account on and no other users.

Hi,

Recently a friend and I believe we have been hacked. We both recieved files from an ex-friend, an image file, my friend told me that a hacker can hack a computer with an encrypted file, is this true? Can a hacker hack a computer or track a IP with an encrypted file? I thought it was only if you went to one of their websites and they stole your cookies.

If anyone has an advice, I'd like to hear it. Since the incident, I have reformatted my PC but I still fear the it is still vunerable.

I am being harrassed by someone who sends me anonymous emails through a Japan based email service. This company wont give me any information on their users. However, I think I know the IP address of the person who is sending it. How do I find out the name, address, etc. that belongs with this IP address?? The number is 207.115.57.79 if anyone feels like a detective. Thanks a bunch everybody!

i just turned on my pc a little while ago, windows comes up w/ a error box sayong, C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\cmd.com, an invalid file system or something or rather. i googled it, it seems it could be a bug or virus. Yesterday about the same time i turned on my pc and i logged in and the taskbar was gone, restarted, did the same thing for a while then it came up. I have Norton 2006 in my comp and have tried removing it with removal tools etc. It is gone except for setup is still in add/remove I have windows xp any idea? When I click on remove it says ''setup has encountered a problem and needs to close''I have no internet security in there right now and need to remove it so I can install another security program.

I had this guy on instant messenger pop up. I have been having issues with my computer, and have been emailing the manufactorer. The guy seemed to be from the company, but after asking him questions, he said was just kidding. I said how did you know I was emailing the company, and he said, oh well I know you have that kind of computer.

I do not know this person, how did he know what type of PC I have?
