Firefox. Ask me which is the best browser out there, and things get a little bit more complicated. I think Opera's the best.

While reading all the other answers, I just kept thinking, this is sad!
Firefox is fast, but not as fast as Opera. Opera had a offline spell-checker way before Firefox 2.0. Firefox has not been very secure, but it's still much more secure than Internet Explorer. Opera has had skins, Opera 9 has its own view source, Opera has had tabs for years, they almost invented MDI surfing!

But if I had to choose between Firefox and Internet Explorer, I'd choose FF. If there's one thing that FF does better than Opera, it's extensions. You need about a dozen or so to do what Opera does by default (besides its own customizations), but there always one or two which just can't be done in Opera. Make sure you keep an objective mind about firefox, however. Here's a good site: www.firefoxmyths.com

IE's pros are: ActiveX (I realise they can be insecure, but some sites like yahoo music just don't work without it), almost all sites work in it. IE7 now got tabs (yes!), an RSS reader (yeah!) and anti-phishing, so it's finally got all the basic features that alternative browser users have gotten used to.

The advantages of Firefox:

faster
better adherence to Web standards
customizable beyond belief
more secure
updated much more frequently
easier to use (in my opinion)

The advantages of IE:

... I'm still thinking ...

ah: it probably came with your computer.
and there are a tiny handful of sites built to work only with IE

In reference to the latter, however, it should be pointed out that there are also sites which break, and break badly, in IE, so it's a toss-up.

I've used numerous browsers, and out of all of them, Firefox is the one I have liked the best. It does the job, it does it well, it does it securely, and I can customize it to do it the way I want it done, no matter what that way is. That pretty much covers what I need in a browser.

I'm not sure why someone would think Firefox is harder to use. It's a Web browers, for the love of little green apples. You type in URLs. You click on links. Y'know, you browse the Web with it. Sure, if you want to get into some of the advanced stuff that Firefox has and IE doesn't, that can get complicated, but you're comparing the difficulty of something that Firefox has with something IE doesn't have at all ... it's not apples and oranges, its' apples and empty space.

As for the gentleman who seems to be on a vendetta against a piece of software, and spams every browser-related thread with the URL of his very misleading website, someone has posted a response to that which can be found here: http://nanobox.chipx86.com/blog/2005/12/re-firefox-myths.php

Firefox is much better because you can download videos easily from any website by copying their URL's. We rarely see these kinds of features in the regular Internet Explorer.

Firefox is faster, more secure, had tabbed browsing first (although the latest version of IE offers that too, now), and is customizable with user-built and Mozilla built plugins and extensions and addons.

I recently wrote a blog on the advantages, including my top picks for Foxfire extensions/addons to make it your own personal browsing experience. Read the article here:

And Layla B. is correct about the spell-check function of the new version of Firefox -- it makes is so easy to blog on the fly and respond to questions on the fly without worrying about typos. If you want to see all the new features of Firefox, visit the release notes page here:

I love how Mr/Mrs Oddball's source above me only shows you Firefox's problems. Let me give you the FULL picture. A side by side comparison of Firefox holes next to Internet Explorer's, first lets take a look at their history :
http://www.webdevout.net/security_summary.php
(Insecure Explosion consistently rates less secure than Firefox and Opera)

You can look at Mr/Mrs Oddball's source "Firefox Myths" and then look at this
http://www.techspot.com/vb/topic44405.html
to see how "Firefox Myths" copied and pasted to make Firefox look bad.

Now lets look at the new versions. It appears that IE7 is continuing it's legacy of insecurity by being 100% unpatched as of Nov 10.

http://secunia.com/product/12434/?task=statistics
I think its best to stick with a browser that has a proven history of being more secure than IE, and as of today (Nov 10), is continuing that record.

Computer Emergency Readiness Team: "There are a number of significant vulnerabilities in technologies related to the IE domain/zone...It is possible to reduce exposure to these vulnerabilities by using a different web browser" http://www.kb.cert.org/vuls/id/713878

On top of this, IE7 still does not support web standards, and this drives up the cost of web developing, leaving us consumers ultimately paying the bill. Compare the results of the web standards test:
The test results are suppose to look like this:

Firefox 2 results (admittedly, not perfect):
http://common.ziffdavisinternet.com/util_get_image/13/0,1425,sz=1&i=133649,00.jpg

IE7 results (Horrible!! Looks like one big Incontinent Explosion):
http://common.ziffdavisinternet.com/util_get_image/13/0,1425,sz=1&i=133650,00.jpg

Opera results (perfect):
http://common.ziffdavisinternet.com/util_get_image/13/0,1425,sz=1&i=133651,00.jpg

You can try the test here to see that I'm not bu11 sh1ting you: http://www.webstandards.org/files/acid2/test.html

Firefox 2 is more secure simply because its built using different technologies than IE.

Need more proof:
