Your common sense, avoid sights you think will contain a virus..

But since you really can't live without free music and porn..

There are difference between PAID and FREE ....

Opera is the fastest and the most secure browser, however it seems abit too secure...

Go with Firefox, a lot addons and such.. and pretty secure.

Best Firewall, I would have to say is, ZoneAlarm from what I'm hearing.. But I heard it's good!

Best Antispyware is free, Spyblaster Search and Destory, and with it Ad-Aware

Best Antivirus is NOT NORTON, it will make uninstalling a pain, installing a pain, renewing a pain, using your computer a pain, speed a pain, and it makes the virtual world go alot more slower...

Get NOD32 or Kaspersky AntiVirus, both cost alot for free get
AVG or Avast, I heard alot of good things about Avast, but I see alot more AVG fanbois... *sigh*

GL... and don't get MacAffee or Norton... Both blow chunks, literally... But Macafee is better then Norton..

It is individual preference. The best you can do is make sure the antivirus and firewall are ICSA certified, and check some reviews. The most popular like Norton/Symantec, and McAfee are not very good just advertised more than others. A few good Antivirus programs are: NOD32, Kaspersky, Trend Micro. Firewalls I suggest Zone Alarm but stay away from security suites they are bloated and screw more up than they help.

Browser would be Firefox 2.0, but always keep IE and don't mess with it as you will always need it for windows updates. For the time being stay away from downloading and installing version 7, it has issues.

For spyware and malware protection, the best on the market are Spysweeper, and spyware doctor, rated one and two. Counterspy and Ewido are down the line and not that acceptable.
Free ones spywareblaster, spybotS&D, adawareSE, and keep CWSshredder around for scanning.

According to me, the best in each category(freebies)are as follows:
1.Firewall - ZoneAlarm(9.5); Windows Firewall(8); Comodo Firewall(8); Outpost(8)
2.Anti-virus - AVG(9); Avast(8); AntiVir(7.5); AOL Active Virus Shield(8)
3.Anti-spyware - SpyBot(8); AdAware(7.5); Windows Defender(8); AVG anti-spyware(7.5)
4.Browser - Firefox 2.0(9); IE 7.0(7.5); Opera9.0.2(8); IE 6.0(6.5); Netscape Navigator(8)

Some people have the impression that freeware don't work properly. But as for my experience, they are perfectly excellent for personal use. They are not so popular for nothing!
