Laptops & Notebooks - December 2006

I've got a problem with my laptop...my CD-ROM isn't working..it just reads DVDs not CDs...so when my windows crashed I have no idea how to reinstall windows...bootable cd won't work and I have no idea how to get into DOS because the laptop doesn't have a floppy...any suggestions?

In my laptop, I have a CD/DVD driver. For whatever reason, I can't play CD's but I can play DVD's. If I put in a DVD, it picks it up and the program starts automatically.

When I put in a CD, nothing happens. If I go into the CD drive in My computer it doesn't even register anything. It's like no CD is in there. It didn't used to be like that.

I'm looking at buying a new laptop pretty soon - it used to be all so easy but these new dual core things have me beat.

Can someone explain the numbering system with the Intel Dual Core processors.. which is faster? they all seem to have numbers that have no meaning to the processor speeds etc.. is there a league/speed table somewhere?

do i need a surge protector for my acer laptop which has a transformer, if there was a surge wouldnt it just blow the transformer ? or would it damage the laptop ?

the laptop has a1 pin connector which i havent seen any surge protectors for.

also i have broadband through the telephone line connected by a wireless netgear router, so again would a surge damage just the router ?

some time my computer's mouse stop working or do not response when i start system.i have repluged and cleaned mouse but of no vain. in control panel, in mouse properties, it shows no driver. after many time strarting system it works and shows mouse driver installed. what is the problem.how can i install a driver of mouse.

I run and operate a medium sized clothing store and I am going to start running my business online. I've been a PC user since 95, I am not too sure what kind of laptop to purchase.. I've heard excellent things about Sony Vaio and the new Mac Book (my budget is to spend no more than 2,000$) I love the mac books however I am not familiar with using Mac. I am self taught, a quick learner and I've heard macs are very user friendly. I've also heard with a mac you are protected against internet hackers but I don't know if that's true. I have been to Best Buy and Comp Usa and got the run around. Please help! I want something that can pick up wireless internet connection easily, runs fast and has a lot of memory for graphics. Also easy to operate! Thanks so much and Happy Holidays!

My laptop had a horrible incident and now it just doesn't work. I know the HDD is unharmed and I need that data. It was a compaq presario 2100, and now I have a Toshiba Satellite L35. The hard drives are not compatible with eachother. The presario has a EIDE and the Toshiba is a SATA type. What do i do? I can't save my files on the old laptop seeing how the old one is now dead.

I bought a Medion laptop 1 year ago and the hard drive crashed and the motherboard within 2 months of each other. Is that the Medion brand really stinks or is it true what the Best Buy salesperson always says - well - if you buy a $5,000 machine it might last 5 years but you can't expect a $900 machine to last more than 2 years because if you pay less upfront - the parts are cheaper so you'll have to buy another one so they can make more money on them. What a load!!!! My DELL desktop is already 3 years old and no issues EVER. My husband is voting for DELL - what's YOUR recommendation?
