It's not clear what type of hardware your laptop came with, however, most new models do have an integrated wireless network adapter. This permits users to log on to an existing network or internet router that uses wireless technology.
Without having your own router you can do this either at a public "hot spot" ( many hotels & restaurants & public areas offer this service by letting people log on to their own routers) or by using someone else's wireless signal without their expressed approval. The latter is ILLEGAL.

No, your not right. you still need a wireless adapter to connect to internet, however as far as i know, all the notebook manufactured now have wireless internet capability. Which is commonly call wireless lan or WIFI enabled. This wifi is a bery popular technology that enables wireless internet connection. Currently there is 802.11g/b and very soon there will be 802.11 n. which offer a larger range. However it is illegal to connect to other people wireless network. Even if they did not set a password. However there are many wireless hot spots ( name for those places that provide wireless internet) . They are usually free OR require you to pay. So please be reminded to check and be sure before using someone else network!
Hope this help you =)

If your computer has Wi Fi (a wireless receiver) you can certainly access many of the wireless networking transmitters that have not been encripted (that need a password). Some of these are free to the public at public places like motels, schools, airports, and the library and you may or may not need a password. Others are wireless transmitters that people are using at home, and maybe didn't bother to encript. This is like stealing, and your browsing may be viewed by someone who knows you are on their system. I think that I would make sure it is ok for you to use someone's system first. Maybe one of your neighbor's would let you share their internet service for a small fee, or maybe you could find a network that is free that there is no problem using.

The wireless adpater is a card you insert into your laptop that is the antenae for recive a wireless signal like a radio antenae. You only need that if your laptop doesn't have a built in wireless device. Now you need something that's gonna transmit or send out the signal for your laptop to recieve. That's a wireless router.Yes it's true many people have unsecure wireless networks. It's unreliable though because if you needed to get online for school or work or something urgent and you couldn't find an unsecured signal, you'd be in trouble.

Well, if someone lets you borrow their wireless adaptor, then you're all set. You'd have to unplug theirs and plug it into your computer, or setup some sort of cable to route the internet from their computer's antenna to your computer.
Either way, you need a wireless adaptor or wireless card.
Oh, do you mean paying for wireless internet? If you live in an area with lots of wireless "hot spots" (usually cities and suburbs), then you can connect to the internet from there, but only if they have an "open" network that doesn't need a password to get on. Just beware, if you use someone else's antenna without their permission and you get caught, you can get into trouble.

Not necessarily true. If you want to log in "wirelessly", you need to have some sort of adapter - unless your processor has one. Intel has a processor called "Centrino", and that has a built-in wireless adapter.
If your computer does not say "Centrino" on it, and it does not have a wireless adapter built in, then you need to purchase a wireless PCMCIA card, or get a USB wireless adapter.
Good luck!

In built up areas there are indeed "wifi hotspots". These are unsecured wireless connections to the internet that anyone is free to use.

You will, of course, need a laptop with wireless support so if it doesn't have it built in then you will need a wireless adapter.

theyre no longer requesting "on the spot computers" - they could ask for "on the spot internet connection" - called wireless, w-lan ... meaning: you dont desire a sim card to browse the internet or skype, yet you should use loose (no password required) wireless (eating places and bars in many situations provide this!) or some locked (with a pincode or password) community. So on the spot laptops have some chip interior, that facilitates you to seek for that "on the spot networks" and connect to it - to provide get admission to to the internet.

basically i just open my laptop
and let it try to connect. Maybe
there are unsecured networks
and maybe there aren't. Its totally
pot luck and there's no rule or
pattern. If you get it, consider
youself blessed. I found though
generally European cities had a
higher incidence of wireless
networks and of those cities
areas closer to the cbd. I'm
in australia right now & it
seems everyone here is
on dsl. :( no wireless connection
no matter whereabouts i went here!!

Most newer laptops have a wireless adaptor built in, it is the internet connection (and wireless router you need to pay for. Using neighbors connections with out their consent is illegal
