RAM AND ROM ARE TWO TYPES OF MEMORIES ANY COMPUTER HAS.....

ROM stands for Random Access Memory
and
RAM stand for Read Only Memory....

One can understand them by names itself.....

Here is a small description....

ROM ( Permanent Memory and Not the Hard disk ..... Its a part of processor or MotherBoard...) contains programs that should not be changed by any user ..... i.e. It contains the programs that run on your computer always like Operating system and the essential programs that are responsible for each and every action that your computer performs.....

It is commonly write protected but today new technologies have evolved and many other types of ROMs have been introduced like PROM ( Programmable ROM ) which can be programmed by user once and used to serve his purposes ,
EPROM ( Erasable PROM ) which can be programmed many times as required ; it should be erased using UV rays , EEPROM ( Electrically EPROM ) these are same as EPROM except they can be erased electrically , And recently Flash memories have been invented which exhibit omni behaviour ; i.e. they are used as both Permanent and temporary memories as required...e.g. The memories used in our mobile phones....

And RAMs are very popular temporary memories that hold the information that are required for immediate processing.... e.g. when you are calculating something the operands and result are held in RAM....

RAM is one of the important factors that determines the performance of a computer ....

More is the RAM size more is the computer speed , faster is the execution and hence the performance....

Today in market we have different sizes of RAMs ranging from 64kB to upto 2GB....

And different Memory cards have been introduced that support the Flash memories or popularly ROMs....
