Laptops & Notebooks - December 2006

I have a user that has a Dell laptop and was updating her Windows XP last night. Unfortunately she shut the laptop lid and now windows hangs after you log in and run the usual start up motions. It gives an svchost error and then right after that the machine locks. I have tried to DL and install from cd the upgrade but the files get copied and then the machine, you guest it locks up. This machine has windows media contection on it as well, if that means anything. Any thoughts.

I have this EMF image on my pc and it wont delete/ copy/ paste let my eidit it or anything. I have made it so that it wasnt read only but no luck any one got any ideas.

I don't know what happened, but for the past week when I have my laptop unplugged from the mains the screen is bright - then when I plug it in, the screen dims!! The reverse should happen!!

Is this a fault or is there a setting I can play with? Anyone know?

I recently bought a new laptop and my cold reboot was so fast. However, once i installed mcaffee security center, my startup became so slow...i decided to uninstall mcafee and i got zonelabs...however my startup was still slow....i did virus scans, spyware, adware, and i also use registry mechanic. I defragged and did harddrive clean several times and i also us msconfig to reduce the amount of programs that start....Even with all this my startup is still slow...I use to use mcafee antivirus that my school provided and my startup was amazingly quick...but once i got mcafee secuirty center my my startup was slow....i dont know what to do...should i reformat my harddrive???

I have a COMPAQ laptop which has 37,3 gigas of hard disk space. I burn all my mp3 as well as pictures but I still have only 28% of free memory (+/-10gigas). so I downloaded Soft-Central SC-DiskInfo and I realized that my complete hard disk C: uses 19,9Gigas!!! see? I don´t know what is consuming the 7 extra gigas!! any ideas?? thank you very much

I spilled sprite on it last night (yeah me). it wasn't ALOT but the keys are now kinda sticking. is there any way for me to safely fix this??? or what else can be done. thanks!!!!!

The n and b keys on my keyboard no longer work due to a spill. Everything else is fine. I found exact replacement keyboards, but frankly, even though I have dissected MANY electrical devices in my day, I am intimidated by this procedure because if I mess up--I could be without the computer for a while. Does anyone know if this is something that someone with average experience could handle?

I have a Toshiba Satellite Pro LAPTOP with a 900MHz processor (Intel) with 512MB RAM.

I have a Dell Dimension DESKTOP 800 MHz processor with 512 MB RAM.

I am running the same engineering application on BOTH of them.

The Dell system will consistently do 850,000 calculations per second.

The Toshiba will start out at around 850,000 calculations/sec and maintain that rate so long as I'm there to move the mouse pointer around every few minutes. If I don't move the mouse pointer, the system seems to enter a standby state that causes the processing to drop from 850k calc/sec down to 90k calc/sec (or less depending on how long it's been idle). The DESKTOP system does not show these symptoms so it has something to do with the laptop. I have it configured to use Desktop Power profile, do not hiberate, no screen saver, etc. None of this seems to make any difference. A friend mentioned cache, but this is not it because the laptop CAN maintain the 850k rate if I babysit it. Thanks !

I'm still a student, so it musn't be too expensive. I've heard that HP and Dell are not recommended (btw, is it true that Dell's batteries self-destruct?); Apple MacBookPro gets too hot easily and has bad performance; and that one should aim for a Sony or a Toshiba. What laptop would you recommend? I have to use it for presentations, school work, gaming, playing music & videos, burning CDs & DVDs, and surfing the net. Oh, the battery life should be long.
