With $2k, you can get a LOT of laptop. Dont buy used (ebay) as you will be buying someone elses problem. Do your research on what you need today, and might need over the next couple of years. Then assume about 25% more power (memory, cpu, disk) to get you beyond the years. Theres a lot of good deals out there.

I just purchased the HP dv9000 (~$1400 loaded) with a SWEET 17" widescreen. I will never go back to a smaller display or monitor.

CPU's today are all fast - even if you dont go for the top of the line - but get the dual core (either amd or intel - dont really matter at that level).
Go at least 1G of fast ram and 120G hard drive. Unless you are really going to need blazing disk access, stay with 5400rpm. Get wifi 'a/b/g' and bluetooth if its cheap ($20). Make sure it comes with a video card instead of the on-board crap. Get quite a few USB2 ports as well.

DO spend for the long life battery. Get a combo cd/dvd burner. Lightscribe is cool, but expensive.

Remember, laptops are not too easy to upgrade once you get them. You can only upgrade memory easily. Disk upgrades are a total swapout, unless you have an option for a 2nd drive (mine does).

Depending how much risk you want to take, you may want the extended warranty.

Lastly think about windows vista. Do your homework. Most pc companies will upgrade you for free.

Altogether, you SHOULD come out of this with a kick a-- laptop and a few hundred to spare on software. There's a lot of good open source out there like openoffice. Same thing with AV. Try if you can to avoid Norton and McAffee being preinstalled. Go instead with free AVG or Avast once you get it home.

Again, depends on what you want to do with it. If your gonna just surf and write emails, get one at walmart for $600. If you want to be productive, go more.

Unless you have a specific reason for spending $2000 on a laptop, I think most people would be satisfied with a laptop costing no more than $1000, and possibly much less.

I have a Gateway laptop that I bought a little over a year ago that I spent about $700 on. It has a DVD burner, an 80GB hard drive and a nice 15.4" display. Other nice features include wireless, four USB 2.0 ports and built in flash memory card reader. It also came with a couple of good programs, including a full version of Nero. I think you could probably buy a comparable computer for about $500 today.

I also have a new MacBook and I'm very pleased with it. The Mac comes with a whole assortment of good software, and it uses the most resent generation of the Intel Core Duo processors. One nice thing about it is that it can run Windows as well as OS X. The MacBook has become my main computer.

Look around. There's a wide variety of reasonably priced laptops around, and they are becoming more capable, and less expensive with new release.

I think I'd avoid eBay for a purchase like a laptop. I think you'll do better by going to a big box retailer, Best Buy, Circuit City, Compusa, etc. You'll be able to try out the laptop before you purchase it, and you can get it serviced locally if necessary.

Alright some choices you can make depending on your needs which you have not really talked about.

Apple - Those laptops are really nice, and if you run an application like parallels you can even run Windows off the machine too since its based on an Intel processor.

HP Tablet PC - These are pretty cool, they work like a standard laptop with KB and then you can swivel the monitor and use it as a tablet. Light and great for taking quick notes, and with Wireless could be a fun way to sit back on the couch and surf the net.

Cheap Laptop - Hmm problem with less expensive laptops is they may not have the best battery life and might become kind of heavy (which defeats the purpose of portability somewhat)

Don't buy your laptop on Ebay. I think you would be hard pressed to go wrong with the Apple (although I am personally a PC fan) but if you don't have any investment in expensive Windows based software like Photoshop etc.. then I think you will be happy with Apple and of course you have the cool factor.

I would personally go with any mac over a PC especially a Toshiba. I have used PCs for ever until about a month ago when a friend of mine recommended a MacBook for my newest laptop. I was skeptical but went ahead and purchased from apple.com and when it arrived it took me a grand total of 6 minutes to set up. The mac has the most software right out of the box. Photo editing, movie editing, calender program, Garage Band, and many more. The only software I purchased was Microsoft office which too was easy setup. Even after being a long time PC user the mac is just so user friendly and the learning curve is virtually none. In fact I find myself trying to do things the hard way when on a mac the answer is always so simple. If you are worried about software choices don't let that affect your decision you can buy many of the PC software titles from apple.com in apple format. Don't buy off Ebay as you will not get a warranty and with computers they are critical. You can get a great deal on a mac by purchasing a refurbished one that is every bit as shiny as a new one. Go to www.store.apple.com then go to special deals, refurbished macs. Hope this helps!

Well, I think the important thing for you to look at is if you want a Mac or a PC.

Each operating system has gotten to very user-friendly states. Windows will have better software support, but Macs have been gaining on them for a few years, and I believe that soon it will be very neck to neck.

Have you used Mac OSX? I think that should be one of the main deciding factors. Try getting your hands on one to try, or checking out Apple's site so that you can get a feel for how it works. It's very sleek, but some may be confused with it, especially if they are used to nothing but Windows.

In the end, you really just have to look at which you want.

Though I will say this, I think if you splurge on a Windows machine, one that cost $400 probably won't be anywhere near the technological level of the MacBook. Try finding an equal if you go PC.

well if you dont know anything about them dont but either. i dont know much about apples, but with the toshiba make sure it has 512 mb of ram or above. if below that then no. it will be slow and not worth it. also if it says 512 on the box it probably will be split with the memory card and suck. it will be some where around 336mb of ram with 190 mb of video ram. thats both good and run somewhat smoothly, but if u have 2 grand y not buy a 1200 dollar computer and buy some products for it, and if u dont know crap about computers, get sum1 to install it for u.

There had been 2 principal schisms in Christian historical past. The first used to be among the Greek Orthodox within the east and the Roman Catholics within the west (5th century). The moment used to be among Catholics and Protestants (16th century). Catholics honored saints and Virgin Mary, believed in purgatory, transubstantiation (the host honestly fitting the frame and blood of Jesus), a Latin Bible and offerings, the pope, and the celibacy of monks. Protestants desired the Bible and offerings in average languages, no complicated gowns or ornament in church buildings, married pastors, and the host without difficulty as a illustration of Jesus' frame and blood. The variations among Catholics and Protestants are useful issues of doctrine; each use the identical Bible and think within the identical Lord. Don't permit someone let you know that one is truer than the opposite--men and women are allowed to interpret the Bible as they see have compatibility. The Catholic Church has performed a satisfactory deal of charity in phrases of setting up hospitals, colleges, orphanages, and poorhouses for the final twenty centuries.

Realistically either laptop could be a good buy - which one better suits your needs. As a consumer of electronics - look past the price - it won't be worth that in a week - the value of a laptop isn't in it's price it is in its usability. Buy the one that will give you the most bang for your buck.

Don't go to Ebay for your laptop. (personal experience)

If you get an apple then you get very little for software and compatablity is very low to other units.
Go to a store like Office Depot and talk to people who sell them asks questions and lots of them. You can get something awesome for 2,000. but you don't need to spend that much to get a good laptop today.
