short on the point

a good laptop, but too big and too heavy for travelling around.

if your dad is travelling a lot with a laptop as additional luggage you better should go for a lighter one with 14.1" display. a pretty good one is the HP dv2000t. you can customize it yourself on the HP homepage.
OS: XP Pro
CPU: T5600
Ram: 1GB (1024MB)
Graphics: Nvidia Go 7200
Screen: BrightView
HD: 100GB
CD/DVD: DVD burner (with or without lightscribe)
Networking: Intel Pro wireless
Primary battery: 12cell (this is very important for someone travelling a lot)
Recovery Disk: XP Pro
Price: below $1200
maybe an extended service plan for 3 years is also to take in consideration.

I think that the HD-DVD player that was added in is a bit pretentious. It is unknown whether the new format HD-DVD, or Blu-ray, will "win" the format war. If you are familiar with the old tale of the Betamax VS. VHS spiel, then this will be something similar.

Barring that, it is a very powerful laptop. It has a lot of HD space, though if it is just going to be used for office work, then it would be a bit overkill. It can perform 1080p video (the highest resolution video, so if you have HD content, it is extra crisp.) Also, it is Windows Vista Capable. (Windows Vista is the new Windows system that will be coming out sometime next year.) The only downfall buying it here as opposed to a store is that you won't get a free upgrade to Vista (most stores will do that) However, you won't get the large drive space and the HD-DVD player.

So all in all, it is a very powerful machine. It could be overkill, but if your father enjoys watching movies/playing games, and/or doing some massive multitasking, then this will be a fine system, though it obviously doesn't come cheap!

Never buy anything in a hurry. The reserve has not been met so he will probably repost it.

Copy the model number and enter it in a price comparer like pricegrabber or MySimon. Search for the price being asked in a few stores for that laptop. Stuff in ebay is most times inflated and no cheaper than in a regular store.

Search for different models in TigerDirect.com, Newegg.com,

If your dad travels a lot I would suggest a light laptop with a small footprint for portability. Unless you have lots of money I would look for a cheaper laptop (in the 900 to 1400 range).

Its a sweet machine what does he do?

Im going to check prices quick to see fi its a deal. Its a good system and pretty powerful.

Looks like a nice deal to me, a shame there's only one.

This is by far one of the most powerful laptops around it is fully loaded with all the features. except a core 2 duo but I would love to have this one. It may be a tad more than your dad needs.

Who knows whether Hd-DVD or blue ray will win right now but this burns DVD's and plays HD. It's truly an extreme system that will last for years.

For that price I would buy direct from Dell or even Apple. Check out there sites. Look for Core 2 Duo... NOT Core Duo. Core 2 is faster, and more energy efficient.

HD DVD is overkill, especially if your only watching movies on a tiny notebooks screen, DVD will be fine. A regular DVD player/burner will do. The dual hard drives probably over kill too.

eBay is risky, especially something that expensive. The most expensive version (link below) is still cheaper then ebay, PLUS you get an EXTRA 2 years of warranty (if) it does break.
