I'm still a student, so it musn't be too expensive. I've heard that HP and Dell are not recommended (btw, is it true that Dell's batteries self-destruct?); Apple MacBookPro gets too hot easily and has bad performance; and that one should aim for a Sony or a Toshiba. What laptop would you recommend? I have to use it for presentations, school work, gaming, playing music & videos, burning CDs & DVDs, and surfing the net. Oh, the battery life should be long.

All are pretty good. The reason dell's batteries blew up was because the batteries were from sony. Not Dell's fault. I would avoid sony because they are to expensive. Macs are problably the best, but again they are expensive. I would try Dell or Toshiba. Try going to walmart or office depot, sometimes you can find good deals. dell.com and toshiba.com are very good if you want those brands. But I would avoid buying any comp until the vista comes up to avoid any hassels of installing a windows version. I read from CNET, that the windows upgrade is not recommended. It is better to reinstall the whole vista program. Good luck. Don't forget to buy accident insurance.

You heard wrong. Get a Dell or Gateway with extended warranty and accidental damage protection. Dell had a recall on batteries used in certain models. Batteries were replaced with different ones under the recall. Warranty repair turnaround times are very quick if you ever have to use it. Don't go cheap on the extra protection. An extra $150 for warranty and accidental damage care can save you up to $600 for replacing the LCD or the system board. Both Dell and Gateway notebooks are very easy to work on if you ever find the need to disassemble for part replacement. As far as price goes, with those kind of demands you are probably looking at close to $1500. Save the gaming for a desktop PC. Desktops are cheaper but too heavy for a lap.

Toshibas have good reputation. I personally like HP (good prices- nicely equiped), Gateway has gotten a lot better in terms of price too.

Any new laptop will handle schoolwork, playing music, vidoes and burning CD's. Most laptops only have 24X CD Burners so you would need to get an external burner if you need speed.

As for games, it would depend what types of games. A powerful laptop with a good graphics card will be very expensive.

It could be better to spend 800 in a desktop to play games and 600 on a stripped down laptop for work than to spend 2000 on a laptop that can do all.

Also think about size. Do you want a huge 17" desktop replacement laptop that's powerful but heavy and clunky? or a 14" very portable one thats not that powerful?
