The computer field changes rapidly, so anything you get will be outdated by a faster, sexier processor. That doesn't mean that it will be useless though. I'm a Macintosh person and using a 6-year old computer. i've upgraded the processor in the meantime, and although I can't play some of the latest-and-greatest games and software, I'm happy with what I have. On top of that, if there is something available that needs a current processor, chances are that there's other software out there that does the same thing but can run on my machine.

You can still get an older Mac or PC and run an operating system called Linux. The operating system is free and a lot of software out there for it is free as well, including games. There's even a program called Gimp that's equivalent to the $500+ program Photoshop, and Gimp is FREE!

A good place to search for used computers is ebay, although if you even go to a good thrift store in the area you'll find usable computers pop up from time to time. Even if the processor and speed are too slow to be usable, you can use other parts like the hard drive and possibly even the RAM (memory) for another faster computer. I found a wireless keyboard at a thrift store for $6 and it works even with the original batteries that were in there!

Good brands are acer aspire and dell inspiron series laptops. Some specs to look for would be: core duo processor at least 2 ghz, 1 gigabyte or more of ram, 60 gigabyte or more of hard drive space (more if you're playing games), 14" or bigger wide-screen LCD display, DVD burner/cdrw burner drive, wireless 802.11 g.

Stay away from apple laptops -- they tend to be very pricey and get outdated very quickly.

Check www.tigerdirect.com for laptop prices.

I just bought an HP Pavilion dv2000t. Whatever you get, make sure you get the free upgrade to Windows Vista. Always get a couple steps above the basics...you'll want it later when new software comes out, etc.
Good luck

You can't beat that price of $599 for what it has:
AMD Turion 64
1GB DDR Ram
DVD/CD Burner
80GB HD
