I'd suggest a Toshiba Sattilite. I have a Toshiba and a Dell, and used to have an hp - and the Toshiba is the hands down winner for me. There are lots of models, but if you are looking for something basic and not spend too much money, something like the link I made below would certainly do the job.
Just stay away from the Celeron processors, they're utter crap.
You'll end up with all kinds of software you don't need, that's just how the market works, but you can always uninstall it.

I personally have 3 different makes of laptops in my house
The first one is an old Dell Latitude P3, This thing is a workhorse and has never given me a bit of trouble but that doesn't mean the new Dells will do the same
The second is a Toshiba P25, This one works really good!!! and it's fast as hell with it's 3.0 ghz P4 processor with Hyper Threading, But the thing that makes it faster than most laptops I can buy today is the 800mghz Front Side Bus Speed, It has a 17" widescreen Harmon Kardon speakers CDR and DVD recording capabilities along with many other really nice features, It would probably cost me well over $2000 to replace this with a new unit and these can be purchase used in very good condition for about $600-700 dollars all day long thru E-Bay or Craigs list (I recommend Craigslist, then you can see it run if you buy used)
I found one for $500 just yesterday and I'm buying it today
The 3rd laptop I have is a fairly new HP pavilion, This thing SUCKS!!!, I will never buy an HP or Compac computer ever again!!!
I have had enough of these guys and when you contact tech support for the blue screen of death you get a guy in India who can barely speak english and doesnt know how to fix it!!!
NEVER AGAIN!!!!
So ask yourself this:
How much money do I want to spend?
What do I really need?
Do I want a used or refurbished computer that comes with a warranty or just buy new?
If I was a student and needed a good cheap laptop I would go to dell.com and start to look at refurbished laptops with a 15" screen and make sure it has at least a DuoCore or if you can afford it a DuoCore 2 processor
Have installed at least 512 meg ram (1 gig minimum would be preferred)
and a cd burner for data backup and get the built in wireless, These usually work better than PCMCIA cards
If you have about $800-900 you can even get a 17" widescreen and they come with the full factory as new warranty
I'm looking for a new one for the wife at christmas, the latitude 1750 looks pretty nice for the money, And dell has a great warranty!!!
Check it out, Hope this helps

For you, the best bet would probably be an Acer Aspire 3624WXMi laptop. It comes without many programs on it, has wireless 802.11 b/g and Bluetooth, surround sound; all for about $600. You would have to install Microsoft Office if you wanted it, but it is Windows Vista Home Basic ready, if you are looking to possibly upgrade. I know because I personally bought one for the same reason and I have been quite pleased with it.

You can ask the store where you purchased your laptop to remove what you don't want. Just ignore all the junk that comes with a new computer though, they all come with it. There is not a bad computer company out there. Go to PC World magazine for their latest version dealing with best to worst computers
