Laptops & Notebooks - December 2006

My cursor has a mind of its own. My laptop is a Dell and is great except the cursor sometimes just glides along on its own like its ice skating. I play lots of games and it just wanders away sometimes. Its very frustrating. Can someone PLEASE help me. I can't afford to take it to t/repair shop. Thank you in advance.

I bought a notebook during Courts Mega sale. This notebook is said to contain Linex Operating System which I do not know how to use. Where can I learn to use it or should I reformat and load it up with Windows XP Home which I am familiar with? FYI, I am not very computer literate. Thank you in advance.

I'm higly considering purchasing a new macbook in a few weeks, along with ilife and most likely iwork as well.

Well, should i get .mac too? whats so good about it? should i go for it? why or why not?

i woud be the only person i know that would own a mac, therefore i feel a .mac would not be best since i wouldnt be able to share it with anyone. also, there is such a site called myspace.

i have tried all the clicking and unclicking and it says its off, yet when i press the P, O, I, U, L, K, J, M, and other button without holding down FN, i get number instead. HELP!!!

Hello, I would to pick the brains of others and see if you can help. I keep getting error two messages.
1. NoName_DbPoolManager_11271250: services.exe _Application Error
The instruction at "0x7c9102f2b" referenced memory at "0x01221b0c". This memory can be "read".
Click on OK to terminate the program

2. event agent scanner has encounter a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.

Could someone please help and explain how to fix?

I left my ibook on sleep and tried to wake it only to get this blank black screen so i restarted it with the power button and then just before I get to see my desktop another page pop that tells me that I need to restart my computer so i do and it keeps telling me to do that i keep trying and i get these other symptoms:

-blank screen
-beeping noise and LED sleep light flashing
-flashing question mark
-mac-boot page with something that says open firmware

i don't know whats wrong with my comp i tried reinstalling the OSX program but i placed the disc in and it doesn't do anything i cabn't even get it to eject the disc.
please help me i only had this comp over a year and i didn't buy the extended warranty.

I run XP Pro on a Dell laptop. On the first floor is the wireless Internet connection. I live an run my laptop, legally, from the second floor. The signal appears to be getting weaker. Is this because my card's going bad or is it because I need an access point on my second floor?

I am looking for a standard notebook, good enough for college and with nice design, I don't want to spend much money but still want good performance. I like so far the style of the apple and vaio, but dell's note offers good price for the performance, my budget is $1000 +/-. If you own one of these notebooks I will apreciate your feed back.

When I insert a CD or DVD into the slim DVD RW drive in my Packard Bell Easynote laptop, it spins but then does not show up in my computer. Also my burning software deosnt see a drive there. It is not new, and has worked til very recently. XP wont let me roll back the driver, andIm not even sure it is a driver problem. The thing is, it did not come with a driver cd, and should be picked up by XP anyway. The windows recovery thing is built in, which would mean reformatting the laptop. To do that I need to backup my files, which is what the DVDRW would do! Im so stuck and need this sorted ASAP please help!

The two years I've had my 17" PowerBook G4 have been a dream — except when it comes to hard drives. I seem to've had a streak of bad luck with them, as the first TWO hard drives I've had have failed, so I recently bought a new (and bigger...100GB vs. 80) drive and had it installed.

However, at some point I want to sell this laptop and buy a MacBook Pro. I'd get around half the needed money for a MBP from just selling the laptop (+ accessories, restore DVDs, etc.), so I obviously can't do it yet. I'm running off an external hard drive. While this works fine, the external is too small for me to install the software I need to make music, so basically I'm just spinning my wheels unless I finally give in and start using the internal.

What do you think? If I break down and install OS X on the internal hard drive and start using the laptop as a laptop again, will it still be saleable by the time I'm able to sell it? Should I save up for yet another drive, to be installed right before sale?

I have an Ibook g3 with 256 MB of ram. I know that it uses PC100 ram. Is it possible to use PC133 Sodimms in my Ibook G3 because it is easier to get ahold of that speed. Specifically a 512 MB stick of ram. Thanks!

I can hear music but I can't hear any sound "effects." Even when I play games... I can hear any background music the game plays but I can't hear any effects, like guns firing, beeps, etc... Everything worked fine until today. How do I fix this? I have a Dell Inspiron E1505. I don't know anything about media cards or anything. I use Windows XP. Anything you can do to help would be greatly appreciated!

We have a Advent 7040 laptop, its main adapter broke, so I bought a new one for £25...that sodding thing broke as well, so I want to get the original fixed. Is there a cheap way of getting this done? Know of a company that does it? (Banging my head against a brick wall!!!)

I was told by the people who repaired my laptop that I need to find the network key. It is lost. What should I do? They did not recommend totally resetting up the D Link Wireless router as an option. It's a DI-524. I don't know how to get the network key or how to reset it. It's not in the instruction manual for the wireless router on how to accomplish this. Does anyone have any idea on the easiest way to solve this issue?

i have a dell latitude c610 laptop. how do i restore it back to factory settings as im selling it and i dont want any of my details on it. i dont have the disc that came with it.
i have had another problem in that it wont play videos or audio. when i click on a file it comes up with a message saying "an internal application error has occurred"

Hi. I was if you could give me some advice about some problems I've been having with a faulty laptop.

I brought the product from Pc World in august (about 4/5 months ago) and I've had nothing but problem with it. In the first month, it completly shut down on me leaving m with the dreaded blue screen of death and a faulty screen. Pc world repaired that, but since it's come back it's been constantly turning it itself on and off at the worst moment. I've had to reinstall windows twice and restore it back to it's factory settings (because it wasn't registering the CD-drive, the audio devices or the inbuilt wireless). I've spend hours on the phone to Pc World helplines who just keep telling me to reinstall windows. I'm at my wits end.

I WOULD like a replacement rather than a refund or repair seeing as it's been repaired in the past and I'm a student that really can't be without a fully working Laptop for any amount of time.

The only problem is I left my reciept in halls, in plymouth and I'm in Birmingham and I can't reach the Pc World in Plymouth (no transport), but as I belong to the PC performance plan, I have all the evidence of the direct debit payments and my very clever mother wrote all the details of reciept (issue date/receipt number etc). Would that do as proof of purchase? Do I have any kind of case against them? I know that they can be pretty tough but if I know I'm in the right so can I!

What do you think I should do?

I am going to be buying a laptop in January or February. I was thinking about the Sony Vaio S Series, but questioning the Vaio in general, how are they? If not, which brand do you reccomend? I'm looking for a multimedia laptop, one that I will be able to watch and record TV/ DVDs and such. About Windows Vista. Should I just get one with XP, then upgrade to Vista if I choose to, or wait for one with Vista installed, to ensure that it has all all the nessicarey componets to make use of the new features. I'm willing to spend up to $1500.
