That does not sound good.
Run First Aid using your install DVD, the 1 with AHT, insert and restart holding down the C key until you get the Installer page, choose Installer > Disk Utility.
When Disk Utility window appears select the First Aid tab, click the Icon for your boot hard drive, the one with OS X and Home folder on it.
Click on Repair Disk.
Quit Disk Utility by choosing Disk Utiliy > Quit Disk Utility
Reboot without holding the C key
If you get to the Desktop, go to Apple menu > System Preferences > Start up Disk > choose Mac OS X HD and restart
If you can't get to the Desktop. Safe Boot into Safe Mode by holding down the Shift key during start up. Then reboot and see if you can get to the Desktop to choose your start up disk.
If you still can't, then Zap the PRAM by restarting while holding the ⌘ + Option + P + R keys all at the same time and let your Mac chime at least 3 X then release the keys and restart without holding down any keys.
If that don't work then reinstall OS X and if you are still having problems after reinstalling then take your Mac in to the Genius bar or to a Apple authorized repair center.

The message telling you that you need to restart your computer is the outwardly visible sign of what's called a "kernel panic", the Mac/UNIX equivalent of Windows' "Blue Screen of Death".

If you're getting a grey screen with a folder icon that flashes between the "happy face" logo and a question mark, your iBook is having trouble finding a working OS to start up into. If you still have the Restore CDs/DVDs that came with the computer, pop the first one in, then restart the iBook while holding down the Option key; select the Apple Hardware Test if it's there, and run those tests. The results may be helpful to tech support people.

Ultimately, I think you may have to take the computer in to an authorized Apple service provider and have it looked at by a professional. Best of luck.

you will need to reinstall the firmware with the cd's that came with. TO do this turn on your ibook and right after the tone hold down the c key. Then use the installer to reload Mac. If that does not work go to the apple store and they will be able to help you. They have great service. Hope this helps.

OUCH! You should not be in the open firmware system!

You may have screwed up your disk... bring it down to an apple store, and have the geniuses take a look at it!

you can force the mac to going into open firmware by pressing several keys at startup... but you probably aren't doing that!

Is the keyboard hosed?
