I have a Dell Inspiron E1405 that has had absolutely nothing wrong w/ it despite the bad rap everyone seems to give to Dell. While my friend has had 3 HP (2 desktops and 1 laptop) having to be brought into repair so honestly I wouldn't even try to venture there. My dad has had his Dell Dimension 5100 for almost 4 years and he only had to have it repaired once (not really repaired just fix some overheating issues that many laptops have). I had an old Dell desktop too that performed great until we gave it away. Honestly though if you don't have any problems learning a new OS (I'm assuming you're used to windows but I don't know) then I would go with Apple. The Apple OS X is a much better OS than windows (Vista in theory is what windows hopes can match it). But with windows XP as it is now it basically just deteriorates over time so it's not really a problem with the laptops themselves just the OS. So if I had to recommend a good laptop I would try an Apple, but if your afraid to change away from the normal VAIOs are usually pretty expensive in bang/buck ratio so I would go w/ a Dell personally.

I bought an HP, my wife a Dell. We both went to school with them for 3 years, and neither of them even came close to holding up. I bought a Mac to start grad work, and it is the best decision i think I could have made. It doesn't break down all the time, it hooks up to everything on the network a lot easier, I installed windows on it using parallels, and couldn't be happier.

Apple runs Mac OS/X, but the decked out new ones will run Windows, but $1000 probably won't get you one of those.
I prefer Vaio over Dell. If you can afford a Vaio, go for it.
If not, you're left with Dell. But consider, instead, a HP (Hewlett Packard).

Over the last 6 years my wife and I have had half a dozen VIAOs or so. Absolutely wonderful machines. All of the older ones are still running as far as I know, we simply upgrade every few years and pass on the old ones to family members or friends. I picked up my current one from Best Buy for about $900 less than two months ago.

well here is what to do before you buy anything... be it computers or other products.... test out their service departments.. call each one see how long it takes you to get through to them... the longer it takes the poorer the service...
if it was me my choice would be
(1) Apple Mac
(2) Sonny Vaio
(3) Dell I would not have one given to me.
I have had to many dell computers brought to me for repair, and you can't get the parts off the shelf, you have to go through dell to get any repairs done

Go buy your self an Apple. I have a PowerBook G4 and Love it. I highly reccomend buying a MacBook or a MacBook Pro. Enjoy! Mac OS X is also so much better than winblows. No viruses, and things just work.

I love my VAIO - have had it over a year, and have had nothing go wrong with it. I paid $1,000 - I'd definitely get another one!
