I have personally owned 4 dells and have to say I have had good luck in last 2 years than the 3 before that. I purchased my first laptop in 2003, and that was a pretty rotten experience- pretty much everything went wrong right after the warranty expired. My most recent laptop (about 1 1/2 Years Old) is an inspiron 9300 and I love it. I would say that if you are going to purchase a dell there are a few things you need to know-
1. buy a huge service plan- dell tends to make alot of computers quickly and the wiring can be shoddy work in some of them, but w/ a service plan you won't have to worry about this
2. never buy a dell not on sale and combine rebates- the last 2 dells i have bought I was patient and ended up almost getting 50% off the initial price- you just have to look for sales and coupons- notebookforums.com has a great coupon section
3. if you are buying a dell- buy a inspiron and not an xps, the xps can be nice but they are a bit overpriced and never go on sale. also about 90% of the time you can get the same technology in a upper level inspiron that you can a xps.
hope this helps, when it comes down to buying, i would encourage you to spec out your dell then go shopping on sony.com or best buy, comp usa, etc... and see if you can't pick up another pc with the same specs and warranty for less.
OH- DONT BUY A TOSHIBA. I have never owned one but I see a TON in for service and the wiring in all of them is absolute crap. Toshiba does not make a good product, just over priced.

While I realize often "Brand Name" questions quickly becomes an opinion poll that tells you nothing and is just a voting spree -- and means those answering it are actually polling opinions and not answering... despite this, I will try to answer.
- People have good, and bad, experiences with any manufacturer. As such, to this effect treat "answers" here to that effect. As a meaningless poll of the few people who happen to view it.
- The bottom line, regardless of Dell or anyone else, is get your $ worth. Compare prices, features, support - and then decide. As far as "Price" the largest contributing price to a laptop is the following, in the following order:
-----Processor Speed (and accompaning motherboard)
-----Screen Size (or ability, resolution, display capability, etc)
-----System Memory (RAM, DDR? DDR2? How much?)
-----Hard Drive Space
-----Extra Features (which could superceede the above, depending on how "extra" it is)
Also, Another general answer. This is coming from someone who repairs laptops. Dell often has custom or proporiatory components. This is not my opinion, but is a fact. These compoents cost more than components in most other laptops that are interchangable. Alienware is another bad case for this (but alienware is actually Dell).
Tried to provide an ANSWER to you - and not a poll. If Dell provides a much better deal over another manufacturer, I would go with that -- but realizing if something went wrong out of warranty, you might have to pay a little extra. The bottom line -- non-biased opinion is -- look at what makes the laptops cost money - and get your moneys worth.

I'd rather buying Toshiba or Mac. BTW, Toshiba is currently giving discounts of up to $600 if you customize your own laptop. Go to http://www.toshibadirect.com
I'm a certified technician and for the past months I've had a lot of trouble with Dell. Moreover, when I tried to call their technical support, my call was transferred to some guy in India that was very hard to understand. I had to call a couple of times to get any results and each call took at least 1 hour.

dells customer service reps are awesome! they really take time with you, and will talk you through anything, and they will stay with you on the line until your problem is resolved. they once stayed on the phone with my teenage son for over an hour helping him with a problem. they are always courteous and patient, and always call you back when they say they will. this does not answer the question as to the make and model that I would purchases, but it does speak to the wonderful service that dell does provide as a company.

Instead of Dell products-buy HP , Toshiba or Gateway products which are most robust and works longer. Both the companies support Technical support through web and install the necessary file to go head. While with dell it's take long time.XPS or Inspiration both have the similar problem,

personally i would never get a laptop no matter who built it. they are just not worth the money, if you, for instance drop a drink in the keyboard by accident then its 9/10 times either broken or in need of very expensive repairs...then there is the reduced life compaired to a PC because they are so hard to upgrade/maintain. it is just not worth the money IMO. as for Dell in general- they are a HUGE company with alot of buying power so they are usually miles cheaper than the competition, just watch what you buy. If u plan on doing much more than serfing the net and writing on it then dont even consider a Celron processor, no matter how much Dell rave about them. they are terrible processors and frankly not worth it.

I would get a Dell because their customer service is awesome, and they give you some pretty good options to customize your computer. Also, they are one of the best values for what you get.

DELL IS THE BEST EVER. EVERYONE IN MY FAMILY HAS A DELL. NO PROBLEMS AT ALL. PEOPLE THAT ARE TELLING YOU TO GET "TOSHIBA, ACER...", DONT LISTEN TO THEM. WE HAVE AN INSPIRON AND OMG ITS THE BEST LAPTOP EVER....THOUGH I'VE NEVER HAD AN XPS, I THINK THEY COME WITH MORE OF A POWER PUNCH THAN INSPIRON, BUT OUR COMPUTER IS PRETTY FAST.....
DELL IS THE BEST, TRUST ME
