When I insert a CD or DVD into the slim DVD RW drive in my Packard Bell Easynote laptop, it spins but then does not show up in my computer. Also my burning software deosnt see a drive there. It is not new, and has worked til very recently. XP wont let me roll back the driver, andIm not even sure it is a driver problem. The thing is, it did not come with a driver cd, and should be picked up by XP anyway. The windows recovery thing is built in, which would mean reformatting the laptop. To do that I need to backup my files, which is what the DVDRW would do! Im so stuck and need this sorted ASAP please help!

turn off the computer, open it up and unplug the drive's data and power cables.

boot the computer into Windows, then turn the computer off again, reattach the cables, and boot up again. Windows should go through the new hardware config and see your drive.

Try right clicking my computer - properties - hardware - and driver and select detect new hardware device under CD drive. Uninstall it and reinstall and restart your computer. If that doesn't fix it - could be a hard ware problem - most likely a loose cable on the back of the drive.

Run a virus check

See if Run / Control Panel / find new hardware finds it

I would do a Yahoo / Google type internet search on this problem.

AND ... do join the simplycomputers2 · Technical Support - Computer Related group.

I would ask THIS QUESTION of that group, . . . for they are in a better position to address this type of issue

could it be that the power cable is connected but the ide/sata lead isn't or is loose? i haven't had experience with this laptop yet but it sounds like you have power going to the drive but no data is being sent to the motherboard.
