I can hear music but I can't hear any sound "effects." Even when I play games... I can hear any background music the game plays but I can't hear any effects, like guns firing, beeps, etc... Everything worked fine until today. How do I fix this? I have a Dell Inspiron E1505. I don't know anything about media cards or anything. I use Windows XP. Anything you can do to help would be greatly appreciated!

I don't see "Sound Effect" in the control panel. I even looked under Sounds, Speech, and...
If I click on the little speaker icon on the bottom right of my screen, it says something about no sound, but I can't check for sure because the icon disappeared!

It says no active mixer devices available when I click on the little icon that now no longer exists. I had sound effects yesterday. Go figure???
