Intel (and MB manual) instruct to enable hyperthreading in Bios BEFORE installing an op sys --- why ? If it was set w/o hyperthreading B4 XP Home was installed, is it safe to enable afterwords ? What harm can happen ? I wish to do some speed tests and toggle back and forth -- OK to do so ?

My Dell desktop, about 5 yrs old, is having some serious problems. When i try starting it up it will do one "beep for about 1 1/2 seconds, then is followed by 2 shorter beeps. After this it sounds like it is running but nothing ever comes up on the monitor at all. I have no clue what the problem was. Previously to this the computer would boot up for about 5 seconds without any display then shutdown and contiune to do this same process over and over. Any help?

With nothing connected, my monitor says no connection. When i plug in my computer to my monitor and boot up, the monitor says "no signal" and goes to sleep. I was fooling with some stuff inside of my desktop (removed the floppy drive, old cr-rom, and old sound card), does anyone have an idea of what i did wrong?

Does the ram make that much of a difference? video memory. not system memory

I had Nvidia cards for years and 3dfx's before that. My main computer that I use has a pci-e ATI Radeon 300se with 256MB of memory (128 actual/128 shared). I just ordered a 128 MB nvidia pci-e 6600.

I was never really happy with my ATI because it did not give me the performance I expected until I recently added memory to my computer. My system is now a P4 2.8Ghz HT 800 fsb with 1.5 gb ddr2 pc3200 and sb live 24 bit audio card.

Which video board would give me better performance. The radeon with hypermemory using 128 MB of my system memory shouldn't lag too much at 400 mhz or the nvidia with less total memory.

I have seen a big difference in performance going from a 64 MB mx4000 AGP to a 128MB mx4000 card PCI in my two children's computers. To my surprise the PCI version performed better because of the extra memory.

I have an old computer that has Windows ME on it. I want to completely erase everything on it and start over with something like Windows XP or something. I was given the computer and it had other programs on it and documents, so I don't want anything left on it. I want the end result to be as though I bought it new from the store. How do I do this and what programs do I need to do this with.

When shutting down my PC saves settings, then says shutting down but does not do so. This has happened for some time, probably since downloading a Windows Update. Switching off at the mains works and there is no need for scandisc on restart.
I run on Windows XP.

I have this black box that keeps popping up on my screen that says volume. It goes away on it's own after a couple seconds. It usually says Volume 100, but the last time it popped up I watched it go from 100 all the way down to 0. I didn't touch anything, but it was like someone was turning it down. It's really odd, and I've never seen it before today. What is it, and how do I get rid of it?

I'm currently RMA-ing my 4th motherboard for my current computer. The first 2 boards were ASUS A8N Deluxe models and the second 2 were ASUS A8N Premium.

Memory: CORSAIR XMS 1GB (2 x 512MB) 184-Pin DDR SDRAM DDR 400 (PC 3200)
Processor: AMD Athlon 64 3500+ Venice 2.2GHz Socket 939 Processor
Video Card: eVGA 256-P2-N376-AX GeForce 6800GT 256MB GDDR3 PCI Express x16
Case: APEVIA X-Dreamer II ATXB4KLW-BK Black Steel ATX Mid Tower

I'm pretty sure at least 2 of the problems were from static electric shocks. That's obviously my fault (and I laughed at my mother for using those silly wrist straps). But I'm not entirely sure the other 2 failures were the same. This computer seems particularly prone to shorting out the motherboard, I don't think I've shorted a motherboard out before and I've built 3 computers. Is there anything that can cause a computer to be prone to shorting out?

I've included the specs just in case :)

Thanks in advance.
