I plan to use it for Internet, writing, digital photography, and music. What options do I need to look for ? How much memory? How much should I expect to spend? It's been a really long time since I've purchased a new computer so all the new terms are confusing me and I don't know what I need. Help!

I have dell desktop, and my processor is Pentium D dual core. I'm concerning to upgrade it to Core2 but I'm not sure that my motherboard will accept it or not.

Right now, running Skype, Live Messenger, Outlook 2003, Word 2007 Beta 2, & two IE 6 windows open (with Virusscan 8 & MS desktop search 3 and a few other things in the background) my system has 50Mb of physical memory free.

Every now and then my system slows to a crawl - just using office applications - it seems to hang for 10 to 20 s - it's really annoying. Recently the PC got unresponsive when downloading a lot of POP mail. It doesn't seem to happen on the more powerful computers I use, so I think an upgrade would help.

The machine's not used for gaming.

The existing hardware's a 866 PIII, with 2 x 256 PC133, ATI All-in-Wonder 128 AGP, Netgear GA302T pci ethernet. D-Link DU-520 pci card for USB 2, the boot disk is a Deskstar DTLA-307015, the main board is an ASUS CUSL2-C (which has an i815EP chipset), and it was an aftermarket PSU, though I don't know what rating.

I'd like to make use of as much of my existing system as possible, mostly to keep the price down.

Cheers

Windows Vista takes 1.2GB of ram just to run the operating system. Windows XP faster than Vista even with the 64 bit drivers on the beta test. I know DirectX 10 is going to come out for it @ the same time, but how can this be any good for gaming? The hardware will be 2 years behind. Everything out today is obsolete as soon as Windows Vista hits the shelf. When do you think the hardware will catch up? Microsoft is such a memory hog. :) omg...this is the big one people kept taking about in 2004....?

I have a Dell Dimension 3000, 768mb of Ram, Intel(R) Celeron(R) CPU 2.40GHz. I added a PCI bus ATI Radeon 9250 and it works perfectly. I just wanted to know if you can put a PCI-express graphics card in a normal PCI bus slot. If not, is there a way to add one or make it work?

I reciently purchased a new motherboard with a 939 zif socket and a I am having trouble installing my Ultra Fire cooling fan. I feel that excessive force is needed to get the clips attached to the base. Here is the question...I noticed that there are two screws that hold the base to the mother board. Should I loosen these screws some to reduce the ammount of pressure needed and then retighten them?

Ok Listen To My Sad Story. I am only 14 years old & am good with computers. So it was time for me to get a new pc. I thought why not build it. So I bought all the parts. I came home and putit all together. I hooked my newly built computer into the monitor and plug socket. WALA it worked. I jumped with happiness for this had been a goal. The next morning I awoke and went on my newly built computer. It powered on Again a shock of happiness went through me again. The the unpredictable happend my computer just shut off. I looked inside of it and everything looked great I looked at everthing and relised i had a fried CPU. My Parents were very nice about it and bought me a new cpu. Guess what when inserting the cpu in I bent 3 pins and broke 1. My parents were going to get me a new CPU AGain but I declined. I returned all the parts except the broken CPU's. But I don't want to give up. Do You think I should get together with a tech and try again with cheap parts (215 dollars total). Thanks

I've connected it to my PC using Firewire and the computer acknowledges it, but I don't have (and can't find on the net) the drivers so I still can't access it. Any suggestions? I want to be able to access it and drag the content from that hard drive to my PC hard drive...if that's possible. I'm tired of having to record using Pinnacle and just want to drag content from the cable box hard drive to my PC hard drive. ALSO, does anyone know what format the video is saved to on the cable box hard drive. Is it like MPEG or what? Thanks!
