The computer guru at a local shop is a guy who worked for a big company and got tired of the rush to market new products so he quit and set up a shop of his own.

HE SAYS;
Mac is more stable, harder for hackers to get into. But can be more expensive than IBM pc. Has much better graphics and is easy to use.

IBM Style PC is less expensive and has far more software available.

This will probably turn into a flame fest between mac/pc proponents but here is goes

Get a mac if:
- You work with graphics/video
- Do not play many games
- Other than doing work with graphics and video you mostly do everyday activities with your computer.

Macs are very nice computers, but there are a few cons:
-expensive - I have found that you can build a comparable PC for half the cost of a mac
-Does not run many apps that are pc only, sure you can load xp in bootcamp, but the whole reason why you bought a mac is to use apple's software
-Limited upgradability- many components do not work for mac/do not have drivers for mac
Pros: Works very nicely, thier OS is great
-looks pretty
-kills PC in graphics/video editing
-more stable due to limited hardware options.

If you are a developer, or you like games, or you are on a limited budget, you should go PC.

Neither, per se. It really all depends and what your preferences are, what you intend to do with the computer, and what level of risk you're willing to take by going with a Windows box. Macs have a much more sophisticated operating system built on a Unix derivative that has a longer track record for stability and security. Where Macs used to have a rather limited set of software applications available to them, that is no longer the case since now most Unix applications can be compiled to run on Macs, such as the world of "open source" software. Macs also have a gorgeous interface that's extremely easy to use.

that really depends on what you are trying to do!
if you are into designing stuff, laying out cool looking pictures etc, if you like your computer to look beautiful, you may want a MAC
If you want to play cool games, if you want to use a lot of vague softwares etc, you may find a PC easier to use.
A PC is also cheaper than a MAC.
Its hard to answer this question without knowing some background on you. It really depends on what you need from a computer

longevity is anothe pro for macs, I set up a 6 year old iMac G3 with Mac OS X 10.4 for my little brother's school work and it runs circles around the supposedly top of the line Dell my parents bought just last year.
