Hi. The faster the better usually, but the fastest you can afford is the answer. Two of the best are AMD and Intel.

Since you are upgrading, the best processor will depend on many things. (1) Your case: do you have a mini tower or a full tower case? Your processor might touch your power supply unit if you want an Intel Pentium IV processor, an AMD processor is preferred; (2) Your important applications: Do you use 3D games a lot? then get an AMD processor. (3) What is your PSU rating? 64-bit prcocessors will need at least 450 Watts PSU. Based on my experience, I will recommend you get an Intel Processor with a single core if you will use your PC for ordinary desktop usage. More than ordinary, get the 2-core processor.

- the fastest seems to be the coolest))), but if u haven't made up ur mind to spend millions for this:
http://computing.vt.edu/research_computing/terascale/pressrelease.html
or thousands for that:
http://www.etegro.com/eng/?module=items&id=24
)))- the best way to save $ and aquire best performance is (IMHO) to wait for Core 2 Duo E4300 (Jan 2007). It has 1.8GHz, Allendale core, L2 stepping, 2ML2 and the price of only about $150. BUT!- due to multiplier 9x u could overclock it to 3.5GHz with aircooling and more with watercooling. Never mind that it reduces the lifetime - progress is pressing and in 2 years all "extreme editions" will be out of date. :-)) it's better to spend $ for a cool motherboard))) and memory)))

if you want an excellent computer...go to falcon norhtwest computers. they have the most icredible systems. they are hundreds of time better than alienware and for the same price. they also sell stuff individually like processors and cooling systems.
