Every few minutes the screen goes black. The monitor does not shut off. The power light is still on when it happens and everything is connected. When it goes black I turn the monitor off and then back on and it works for another few minutes and then it happens again. It's is less than a year old. Anyone know what the problem may be? Thank you.

My girlfriends pc had an error that "previous shutdown was due to thermal temp" and I found out the cpu fan was broke. I just replaced it and turned it on and it take almost 15 min to boot to windows and is dead slow the entire time. I ordered a replacement cpu but should I be concerned about any other parts like ram or the mb?

The fan was just an exhaust for the cpu heatsink so I could only guess the only directly effected part was the cpu.

I know I have to be careful about static electricity - but I'm not sure why or indeed how.

I only want to clean out the fluff and dust so the fan and heat sink can work properly, I don't want to fry anything vital.

Thanks

I have several older computers that take different types of RAM.

I'd like to be able to go to a site that "shows a picture" of the different types of RAM modules.

Can you direct me to any?

(I have Windows XP) When I click on the start, then turn off computer and click turn off or restart, it does nothing. It won't even let me log off. The only way I can turn it off is if I hit the power button myself. Please help, I have no idea what to do, or what is even wrong.

I'm not incredibly computer saavy but have read something about looking at BIOS and boot records. Unfortunately everything I'm reading is above my head and might as well be in another language. Can someone give me dumbed down instructions to fix my computer please?

Hi. I got some bad news yesterday. My PC is ~ 5.5 years old, and the hard drive (HD) has developed "bad sectors." Apparently, whenever the HD operates and it "hits" a bad sector, it then "skips" and creates MORE of them... So, I bought a replacement hard drive last night.

I'm pretty sure that I can "copy over" my data files, with no problem. My questions are:

1. What about the "hidden" files? Do I try and click on "C:" and create a "mirror" of the drive, on my new E:?

2. How about installing the operating system (Windows 2k)? Do that from CDs?

3. Lastly, how do I let the computer / BIOS know, that once I have Win 2K up on my E:, that I want to use that as my start-up (I think "master") drive? Please be DETAILED, in your reply!

Kurt

FLW-UP: "How" do I create a Start-Up Disk, for Win 2K? Create a floppy, or boot off the CD-ROM? Also, the Tech guy at Comp USA mentioned a concern about "partitioning" the O/S? What is "pendrive" - S/W or H/W? Thanks!

I will be using my comp, when I close an internet window, sometimes it just shows a blue screen with some type on it, then shuts down. I have scanned for viruses and spyware, and could find none. I also deleted the internet cache. It still happens.

I have:
Pentium 4 Asus Motherboard 2.66GHz
512 MB RAM
256 MB Nvidia Video Card
80 GB Hard Disk (Mainly for software)
40 GB Hard Disk (Partitioned-this is where i put my files)

My boyfriend has:
Pentium 4 MSI Motherboard 2.80GHz
512 MB RAM
128 MB ATI Radeon Video Card
80 GB Hard DIsk

I just bought my pc last month and boyfriend's pc is 2 years old without internet connection so he doesn't get any updates. But for some insane reason, he can play high requirement games like Hitman (the new one) and Oblivion on his pc!!! Meanwhile, I can't play them on mine because they run extremely slow! But it runs so smoothly on his.

Why is this so?
What should I do to improve my pc performance?

I want to add another hd to my pc. I currently have an IDE hd. I've heard that SATA are faster than IDE. True or False?

Also, if I were to get a SATA hd, would i be able to run both an IDE and a SATA at the same time? Or would the SATA just override the IDE.

Any ideas?
