well Windows 98 provide you with utilities like Disk check up and Defragment, run it once to put the files in order on the Hard Disk,it will recollect the files to a common location by Collecting empty space, this may helpto put the files in order and together and speed up the data transfer rate and you can transfer data easily and moreover in case you accidentaly loss your data download a software from net named "easy recovery professional",if you want to copy some specific files and which are large in size you go for a software "File Splitter" that halfs the file size and you can copy files easily.Hope this may solve

You must recover your data with a program like R-Studio, this access to your hard drive in low level way so it make an analisys of what is able to recover and what is not, I've used it in my windows 98, and I've recovered data from ntfs partition, extfs linux partition and of course fat32.

When I typed in "hard disc repair free download" in Google and hit "Search", I got 6,220,000 results!
I'd suggest you do that and select the one most suited to your needs[system configuration, OS etc.]; since you were rather vague about these, and download and use it.
All the best.
Cheers.

You can try one of those USB hard drives. You put your IDE hard drive in the case and it turns it into a USB drive that you plug into a USB port. It has worked for me before.
