I know I have to be careful about static electricity - but I'm not sure why or indeed how.

I only want to clean out the fluff and dust so the fan and heat sink can work properly, I don't want to fry anything vital.

Thanks

Get an ESD wrist strap with a grounding pad . The MOBO runs off of DC power and ESD (electric static discharge) is AC and can run higher volts then the components in the computer. For the heat sink and CPU ----canned air-----

Eayist way not to fry anthing is check the heat sink is fitted propperly and securly bofore rebooting the machine. I would take a mental note of what it looked like beofre you strated and what you did to remove it.

Also you can get staticr wrist bands if you worried about that sort of thing, but getting dust out usally isn't a major problem.

Just discharge yourself against a grounded piece of metal before you open up the case. If you do not touch anything inside and just blow out the dust, you are going to be pretty safe.

Easiest way to clean them I have found is to get an office duster, the pressurized air that comes in a can, and blow it all out. Then use a dust buster to get rid of that.

to discharge yourself, just touch any unpainted metal object, like the inside of your PC's case. do it periodically. and try not to work where there is carpet, those are like batteries >_<
