Every few minutes the screen goes black. The monitor does not shut off. The power light is still on when it happens and everything is connected. When it goes black I turn the monitor off and then back on and it works for another few minutes and then it happens again. It's is less than a year old. Anyone know what the problem may be? Thank you.

I don't believe it has anything to do with the screen saver because it happens when I'm in the middle of typing something or using the mouse.

Is it an LCD? If so, your Inverter is probably going out. I know its only a year old , but if its a cheaper model or a Gateway LCD its a good possibility.

If you got a good named brand monitor I would take advantage of the warranty (usually 3 years on major brands) and get it replaced. Power Surges due to lighting storms or brown outs can also damage electronics. Get a good surge protector to guard your computer and other electronics from damage. A good $20 power strip or even better, a UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply) will help protect your equipment.

Its NOT the video card. Turning the monitor on and off would not effect a video card problem.

I'm sure someone else will chime in but I would say that while most monitors will last you a long time, I have a Samsung going on four years working just like new, but sometimes they decide to just quit on you for no apparent reason (well there are reasons such as power surges, component failures and so on).

If you have another monitor lying around try using it and see if it happens, if it does not, you can conclude it is not the monitor, if it does not then it is your monitor failing in which case the answer is to buy a new monitor and consider either a Samsung or Viewsonic, I've never had a problem with either brand, don't even get me started on... yeah just stick with Samsung or Viewsonic.

It could be of 2 things. The monitor itself or video card. I would recommend you attach the monitor to another PC or laptop if you can and see if that makes a difference and if it does, you'll know it's the video card. Now if it still poses a problem, it could be the monitor itself. It could be a hardware issue or you could try and change the refresh rate and see if that makes a difference. If you need help on how to change the refresh rate once you have tried the above first, feel free to email me at red.gnomos [at] gmail.com. Replace the [at] with @

If it is under warranty then call you mfgr. tech support and report it immediately. They will instruct you from there as to what to do and how to do it.

if it's in warranty get it fixed or replaced before it runs out.
