My new computer has a place for two drives but only provides one drive and a spce for the other.I'm just wondering if I can plug in the old CD-Rom and roll with it or do I have to buy a new deck????MB

The answer is no. A cd-rom isn't capable of reading a dvd.
Given today's technology you don't really need a second drive.You can copy a dvd using the single drive with most dvd-burning softwares.
You might want to put the cd drive in anyway for listening to music to save wear and tear on your dvd burner drive.

DVD player/burner can play/burn both DVD and CD. However, CD player/burner can only play/burn CD.

You only need the DVD player to do both you see.

If you decide you still want to have the CD player installed, make your DVD the primary (master), and the CD secondary (slave) both on the 2nd IDE channel.
