Hardware - December 2006

I'm interested in purchasing either the Think Pad R60 or Dell Inspiron 1505.
PC Mag. cautions against a "stiff" keyboard on the R60. Has that been a problem for you or is it overstated?
Any opinio0n between the performance of the above 2 computers.

The device manager reconizes the drive only on reboot. after I open and close tray the DVD/CD drive is not in the hardware device manager.The yellow light stays on and I can only open tray when I reboot The drive does not run at any time.Do I need a new drive. Thanking you in advance.

I've inherited an old PC (1998 vintage) with 64MB RAM, I want to increase this RAM. Opening up the box I can see three slots for DIMMS/SIMMS. Only one of the slots is occupied (by a SIMM), it says on the SIMM:

Infinean HYS64V8300GU-8-B
8Mx64 SDRAM
PC100-222-620
B2 80303

64 Mb, Sync, 100Mhz, CL2

Which of these numbers are important to know for buying extra memory? I've seen reference to PC100 and 133 memory in shops.

I just got 2 new LCD monitors. I have heard from colleagues that LCD's are not as accurate color-wise as CRT's - so I am considering keeping one in the loop (1 LCD and 1 CRT - I run dual display). I do a lot of print work and I want to be sure I have accuracy as far as color. The problem is my 19" CRT is massive and I would rather use an LCD for space on my desk.

i bought a new pc....jus few months ago.. it was running perfectly .. but since last 2 months.... the sound of my cpu fan has increasd a lot...i had contactd wid the dealer.. he said its ok...

I have a mic and speakers. I am using WinXP Pro. The modem is PnP w/o a CD. XP detects and installs the modem. I need to use it just for manual dialing like a regular phone but I do NOT want to pay for anything. I need a FREE solution that is not a limited trial. The best thing would be if theres something already in XP. I use DSL for my internet btw.

I have an Inspiron 600m. The problem: If I close the top of the laptop down, it stops playing songs, for example in iTunes or in Windows Media Player... Is there any way to fix this, does anyone know? Thanks so much!

I just bought a new Dell Inspiron 1501.
AMD Turion 64 x2, 1.8 gig processor
ATI Radeon 1150 Xpress 256 mb graphics card
1 Gb memory, on one stick...or whatever

The computer seems to work great everything except when I try to play "Black & White 2" The game runs extremely slow, screen is kinda jerky, etc. I have not tried other high performance games.

I have tried closing all unneeded background programs, lowering the game detail, resolution, etc, but the game still runs slow. The game has both patches from EA, but still no real improvement.

Why does this happen and what can i do to fix it?

i would like to know if you can select an area of the screen to be projected, not the whole screen. like if you wanted to show a part of a video but not the notes or lists on the screen.

It shuts off for no reason about every 10-11 days. I have to turn it off in the back then turn it on for it to work again. What could be the problem. It's a LG and I had it almost 18 months.
