I just got 2 new LCD monitors. I have heard from colleagues that LCD's are not as accurate color-wise as CRT's - so I am considering keeping one in the loop (1 LCD and 1 CRT - I run dual display). I do a lot of print work and I want to be sure I have accuracy as far as color. The problem is my 19" CRT is massive and I would rather use an LCD for space on my desk.

A good high-end CRT will surpass any LCD for proofing.

That said, you can often alter the color profile in the Display Properties window (click the Advanced button) if you are running the video card manufacturer's driver and management suite. Compare hard copies to the monitor and adjust as needed. That's a good idea with any monitor, CRT or LCD. And you should re-check it periodically; once a month or so should be fine for most work.

One last thought on LCDs. Make sure that you are running it in its native display resolution. Most LCDs can display at other resolutions but you will get heavy pixelization (jaggies) at anything other than the native resolution.

LCD can have a better display from CRT as it has very small pixels that can adjust themselves to almost any color (Depends on the Graphic card or the processor Graphics If they can support that color). But they are not rough and tough.A small bump can damage their pixels. But CRT's are not. They are totally rough and tough and have a higher life expectancy than LCD's. But It is not good at all as it consumes higher Electricity, Have More weight, Consumes more space Which is not good. They are also not good for gaming and designing Use as they cannot support High resolutions whereas LCD's and LED's can.

Traditionally, CRTs were better as far a clarity, lack of ghosting, and color. LCDs have pretty much caught up with CRTs now, though.

The thing is that you will have to spend quite a bit to get an LCD which will match a CRT.

The low-cost LCDs that you see for sale on the web and at places like Wal-Mart aren't going to match a CRT.

It basically depends on the brand you purchase. Your higher end LCD's can compete with the CRT's. Some better brands are ViewSonic, Apple, Sony and LaCie. LaCie has always been known for their excellent CRT's for graphic professionals. All they carry now are LCD displays. Their LCD displays have frames which remove visual distractions from your field of vision. They have calibrators for LCD displays. Check out their website.

Prices range from the 300's to over 700.

I don't work for them. :)

I've got a viewsonic VS10057 17" and the quality is absolutely amazing, it's clear, sharp and you can change all the brightness settings too. it's durable and stylish and quick to switch on with stylish and easy buttons. Also LCDs use less energy than a CRT and take up less room.
