do a format from a bootable cd (xp cd would do).

Format the hard drive. Place your Windows CD in the CD drive and boot the laptop. Let the Windows install begin. Right after you do the F8 to agree, it will give you the option to format or partition the hard drive. Format the drive. Once the format is done, if you do not want Windows to reinstall, simple turn off the computer.

Remember that uninstalling Windows will wipe all the files on your computer.
