Dell is bad...they may be easy to fix, but that's so they can have a quick turn-around when you have to send it in for repairs. Compaq is bad, don't waste your money. Don't buy anything from Walmart of Kmart, if you have a problem you're pretty much screwed. Watch for deals with HP, Gateway, and Sony (if you have a little extra cash). Just because one person hasn't had any problems with a certain manufacturer doesn't mean that they aren't horrible. You can't really go wrong with building your own PC...if it's crap, it's your fault.

I recommend Dell, you will get the most bang for your buck there. Their computers are good and they have great technical support. I should know, I was a Dell service technician last year.
