Yes you can. You will need a crossover RJ45 cable (usually a green colour). You don't need any driver program. Other ways to network two computers together can be found here:

Yes you can connect computer together with RJ45 cable. There are a couple different ways to do it. If you have standard cables (straight thru) then you will need a Hub/Switch or Router to put inbetween the computers. If you have or get a "crossover" cable then no additional hardware is necessary.
There isn't any additional software or drivers required either - just ensure you share the files you are wanting to transfer. Hope this helps.

Yes you can. If you are working with XP you should get a Patch cable. It is a RJ-45 connector but the wires inside are configured differently. They cost about $5-10 bucks depending on where you live. When you connect both ends at the Network interface card, you can temporarily share your folders and drive so you can transfer. To share your folders and drive, right click on the folder or drive and choose sharing. Make sure you allow sharing and to make changes as well.

you can connect, but it requiers a router. You will also need two Straight Through Cables to run from the computers to the router. If you just want to go computer to computer, then get a Crossover Cable. That will link the two compyters together directly without the use of a router. After you get ther connected, i have found it useful to use windows media connect to share files VERY easily. But i have also put files in my shared folder and my shared network folder.
Good Luck

a switch or router to do that but not a network cable or patch cable will make network or share resources.

Not sure if you can do it using an ethernet cable but I know that you can do it using a USB cable.
Even then, I'm not sure that you can "share resources" this way. I think all that it allows you to do is transfer files from one system to another.

Just:
1. Set the Workgroup to be the same in both.
2. Set the IP in both to be 192.168.001.***, make sure the *** part is different in both.
3. Connect them.
