Well, I DON'T work for Geeksquad....

It depends. Sometimes the hard drive will just die...stop powering up all together. Sometimes it will make an awful 'clicking' noise. This is a sure sign that it is on its last legs and will fail soon. Either way, make sure you always have a backup of your data!

Any other symptons will most likely be related to software/operating system or be an unrelated hardware issue (For example, some BSOD errors can be caused by improperly seated memory).

Is there a specific issue that you are having? If so, please elaborate.

Please explain more.
Is your computer sensing the HDD ? Try to sense it through bios. Is it detecting the drive?

If it is detecting and you are not able to access the HDD, partition table may got corrupt. You can use fdisk like utility to remove partition and create it again. But be careful, doing so you will lose all your data from HDD. If fdisk works, you can go for format and reinstallation of all softwares again.

If it is physically damaged, its difficult to get it repaired, buy a new one.

If your computer is not working properly while you are working on it, it could be a problem with device drivers, hardware or software.
