Check your power supply. When I bought my HP the same thing kept happening to me. I had a friend look at it. He put in a 350 watt power supply and everything worked perfectly. HP usually puts a 250 watt power supply in the tower which is not alot of power for more up to date PC's.

When you say recognize, do you mean that the computer shows that you have a CD drive present (does it show up on your "My Computer" drives?) or do you mean it just refuses to open itself (the tray) up after you close it for the first time? Try reinstalling the drivers for your cd drive (Right click on My Computer (the icon not the shortcut) and clicking properties. Go to the Device Manager and look for your cd drive.) Uninstall the in the device manager and right click on the sub-branch the drive was under. Click the Scan for Hardware changes and let it reinstall the drivers to your CD drive. Reboot and check to see if that fixed it.

It sounds like a virus to me. I had the same problem a year ago. I eventually had to bring it to a computer specialist. They removed the virus (more than 1), spyware and other junk. Works fine now, but I run a virus check and do a spyware scan 3 times a week and on everything coming in.

sound like your drive is damaged. either by a powersurge or a bad connection. i'd bring it into your local geek squad precinct and let them do a quick check its free and they just check all the connections to make sure nothing loose. they can also point you towards a good replacement and get it all installed and setup for you. But i should warn it could also be motherboard damage or even something as simple as a bad IDE cable. but the Agents at your local precinct will be able to tell you for sure

If your computer is not working properly while you are working on it, it could be a problem with device drivers, hardware or software.
