Apple or Dell is my basic answer. Depending on many things, including total cost, what the laptop will be used for, etc. I have and will in the future recommend others.
A basic Apple or Dell is more than enough for a very light to moderate computer use: websurfing, writing word documents, etc.
A higher end machine, like an Alienware, is much better suited for gaming. HP and IBM/Lenovo make very rock solid business class machines. Sony laptops, to me, will always NOT be worth the price...their styling is ok, at best, these days and for the premium you pay it's not worth it.
I can't recommend Toshiba: I have seen many of them fail completely, just outside of their warrenty period. A few years ago, I would have recommended them without question, but lately the quality and longevity of their products has dropped off considerably.
How much do you want to spend and what will it be used for? If you answer that, I can give you a recommendation for the perfect laptop for you.

Lenovo (formerly IBM - IBM sold their PC/laptop division to Lenovo of China a year or so ago) is, in my view, the best. When you pick one out, notice the feel of the materials. Laptops have to be sturdy since they're handled so much. Also, support is generally very good with Lenovo and you can download an application from their website and it will scan the laptop and update the firmware, software and anything else needed after reboot, of course. I think Lenovo is trying to maintain the IBM quality. Extended warranties are worth it on laptops so if you're offered one buy the longest you can afford and invest in a good padded leather case/satchel. Good Luck!

Listen to Crisis......
DO NOT GO BY BRAND! Check to see what parts they offer inside and if its expandable. If you go around asking what brand, you are being too general, any brand computer can suck if it has nothing good inside it! Look for atleast a intel pentium 4 processor or a dual core. Also go with atleast 512mb of memory. Go with at least an 80gb hard drive (depends on how much stuff you hold on it ie: music,games,videos,pictures,et... And thats about it thats really important. But like i said before dont let brands fool you, its whats inside!
Believe me, i actually know whats good in a computer unlike some of the computer unliterate people.

Nokia 5200 is better than Samsung E250....Why I'm saying this ? Well, here you go : 1) Weak Structural Composition 2) Low Battery Time 3) Weak Graphics 4) Cannot Set Own Backround (Streaching accross screen like manufactures) 5) Cannot Set Message Alert Tone using your own MP3s, MIDI. But Nokia 5200 is much better in respect to this Samsung E250 which is much Durable than the Samsung, Battery is good, Audio/Video Quality is good too.

I've always had good luck with Dell. I have the Inspiron E1505 which is a multimedia computer. Can play DVD movies without booting up, and can multi task. It has a dual processor. Great warranty and customer service.
It all depends on what you'll be using the laptop for. Highly intensive graphics work, you may want to go with a Mac....but they'll cost you alot.

I have owned two laptops in my life and my dad has had one.
I had a DELL
and in the middle of the night, the battery caught on fire and nearly burned down our house.
My dad had a compaq that mysteriously stopped working two months after its purchase.
I currently own a Toshiba. And I have ad it for two years and I have not had a single problem with it.
Whatever you chose though. I recommend a warrenty.
good luck

Dell, Fijitsu, HP, Sony are all good brands that are reliable have have good customer support, Sony is a little more expensive but have a more fashionable look. Dell is pretty cheap especially if you catch one of their specials.
