The other day i went to turn my PC on and it turned itself ooff again after about two seconds. I tried repeatedly dozens of times when finally it started up and came to a screen where it said 'Start Windows' and something like'F1 to System Controls' and i clicked 'Start Windows.' It worked and over the next few days i had no problems starting up my PC. However, this morning i had to go through a similar process to get my PC running and i'm starting to fear turning my PC off incase it stops working! Does anyone know whats going on, or how i can fix it!?!?!

I want to build my first computer in the spring of 2007 and I'd like recommendations from computer builders and experts out there now so I can start buying the parts over the few months.

I'd like a "wish list" of parts you recommend to include: cpu, mobo, case, PSU, HDD's, RAM, graphics and audio card, operating system, necessary ports, slots, and anything else you'd care to recommend.

I don't have any preconceived ideas about what I want or need, so you are free to recommend whatever.

I have an LCD monitor that I'm going to have to live with for a while.

The only advice I can give you is this: I am not a gamer and probably never will be. Not that I have a thing against gamers; I just don't think I would ever be interested in getting into that.

I'll use the computer for photo and video editing for the most part.

Pleae provide brand names and model numbers for everything you recommend.

Only one limitation, the price $1000 or less.

Last weekend I had a short power outage. My computer was turned on when this happened. After, my computer turned on with no problem, but my monitor was another story. The light came on in the front when I turned it on, but nothing would display on the screen. I tried another monitor, and that one worked fine. Then I tried my original monitor again, and it started working.

For a few days afterwards, my monitor would randomly stop working at times. Don't laugh... but simply beating on the top of the monitor would eventually get it to work again. One time, the screen came back but had a lot of red distortion, although it disappeared eventually.

For the past few days, I haven't had any real problem with the monitor, but once in a while the screen will flicker with a thick line for a split second.

Any thoughts on what is wrong with my monitor? Should it be replaced?

I'm trying to wipe my laptop and then re-install it as it's about 4 years old and running VERY slow. It needs to start again!! I've tried various boot disks to get me to a DOS prompt but it either won't allow me to 'format c:' or says 'Invalid drive specification'. I'm running XP Home edition.
