Computer Networking - November 2007

[Selected]: All categories Computers & Internet Computer Networking

I dont know very much about computers, let alone networking. My bf knows and he showed me how to look and see if someone else is on my network by going to "View workgroup computers". He showed me because every now and then my internet becomes very slow and I cant do anything, not even homework from college. There are two people who keep poping up on my network and he says that is the reason my internet gets slow but he does not know how to get rid of them. If you click on one it says I need a pw and the username is gray with "DEREK\Guest" on it. The other I can click on but it askes for a pw if I try to get in any of the folders. My bf broke off the wireless router from the internet box but they still get on. How can I get rid of them? I'd really appreciate it if someone could help me. Thank you.

Hello
I have D-Link DIR-655 Xtreme N Gigabit Router at home and there are multiple people connected to it wired and wirelessly. My ISP gives me a bandwidth limit. some people on the network abuse the system, as a result, my ISP terminated my internet access.
Is there a software that I can buy that lets me monitor the network and see what they are viewing and downloading. I would also want the software to set a limit on each PC as to how much bandwidth limit allowed.

btw, i'm the network admin.

thank you for any help

regards

The government now says we have a choice, but do we?? How are we to choose between the best cable provider if most cities only have one provider in each area. Cable companies have an unspoken agreement not to infringe on each other so that they can control the excessive costs that we are charged. So other than satellite do we really have a choice. What about HD?? The government says that networks have to broadcast in HD but why are we charged such high prices by cable companies for something that was designed to be a free service??

Hi,
A friend of mine works in a doctor's office. The server is on one coridoor of the building, and the user on that side are hard wired directly to a router.

The staff across the hall(new space) have not connected yet.
Can wireless be used. What encryption scheme is necessary.
They are about 50-75 yards from the server. Will a repeater need to be installed to 'boost' the signal. What frequency should be used? They do not want a screen refresh delay.

Please be as specific as possible with your solution.
The provider of the best solution's name will be provided to the user if you desire.

Regards,

Dick

My laptop does not indicate the usual wireless symbol on my taskbar. I can't surf the net on my wireless. The buttons and indicators are all switched on and my wireless router is also working fine. The problem is my computer does not have any wireless connection link. So how do I solve this problem? I am suspecting it is my driver's problem. If so what do I do? Thanks.

*ps: the internet is working fine on ethernet ports.

I am still looking for best solution for Wireless Internet Access for Motel. Describe- the motel business has one modem and one Netgear WPN824 Wireless Router and two LAN connection block. Currently the motel business four computers and possiblity fifth computer (Server) and all network together. Security is must to protect the business and customers. Business building itself is concrete except walkway which is open. Building is two storeage tall. Basic setup is Router to Firewall to Switch to Access or Modem to Server to Switch to Access Points. Many people had stated you will need Windows Server OS and other people you can do without Server. Why you would need Server PC? Is possible do with first step? What about connectivity? I am sure nobody will use all 12 Access Points at same time.
Please someone help me with right answer.???

I have a single IP address. At the same time, I have 2 FTP servers (NAS and CMS) which is both using port 21. Both servers doesn't allow me to make changes to their port setting.
Is there anyway that I can have one IP address using 2 FTP ports (21)? How about at the router side? I am using Linksys 200G btw.

Please help.Thanks.
