I dont know very much about computers, let alone networking. My bf knows and he showed me how to look and see if someone else is on my network by going to "View workgroup computers". He showed me because every now and then my internet becomes very slow and I cant do anything, not even homework from college. There are two people who keep poping up on my network and he says that is the reason my internet gets slow but he does not know how to get rid of them. If you click on one it says I need a pw and the username is gray with "DEREK\Guest" on it. The other I can click on but it askes for a pw if I try to get in any of the folders. My bf broke off the wireless router from the internet box but they still get on. How can I get rid of them? I'd really appreciate it if someone could help me. Thank you.

You need to set up a password for your network from your computer. This is the only way to get people to stop using your bandwidth. If your boyfriend was able to help you find out who is on your network, he should be able to help you set up a password. If you have any troubles setting it up please email me.

Just because someone is in your Network Places does not mean they are using your resources, I.e. your bandwidth. This is only an indication they are on your subnet.

If this is a home network and you have a router you can set up what they refer to is “MAC filtering”. You will find this in your advanced properties page of your router configuration. When you get there enable it and add your PC to it and only your PC, you will see your PC name along with your MAC to add it. Once this is enabled you will be the only one to use your actual Internet connection.

Moreover, if you’re using a router you can see who is actually on your network and “using” your bandwidth. From there you will also be able to disconnect them, or should be able to depending on your router brand and its functionality.

Additionally.

If you are running Windows XP/2000 your “guest” account is disabled by default therefore unless you have set up shares on your PC there is no need to modify passwords. The password dialog box you are seeing is “their” computer and its wanting you to enter a password for access to that PC, just as they would get the same by trying to get to your PC.

if your not using your wireless connections anymore then there shouldn't be a problem but if you are just set up a pw to connection to the internet on the wirless router so people just can not log on freely
