Windows can use any number of protocols (NetBIOS/NetBEUI, IPX/SPX, TCP/IP) to communicate with other computers on a network.

TCP/IP is the protocol that is used on The Internet, but its not the only network protocol that windows supports.

As standard 98 should load tcp/ip, it also has netbui, a very limited protocol, and capability for IPX/SPX which is the netware protocol.

NetBEUI is the easiest and fastest to set up but is limits to small networks, like about 10-15 devices. Simply add it to your protocal stack along with the device(s) you want to communicate to and your done.
