A lot depends on your router, your AP, and what you want to do with it.

WDS is commonly used for this arrangement. You must put the MAC address of the AP in the router and the MAC address of the router in the AP. This is the most effecient method for connecting and AP to a Router without wires. The AP must also be set to the same channel as the router! They then become as a single unit and you can "roam" between them just like a cell phone!

The second method is the repetitive mode where the AP becomes a "repeater". Some allow this very similar to WDS without the MAC address being used. You first set the AP as a client of the Router, then enable repeat mode on the AP. This, on some AP's becomes a new AP with a new SSID, on some it works like WDS and is just a range extension.

Point to point is just that allows your AP to receive the Router and pass it to the ethernet port but it does not repeat or become an AP -- it is just a client for receiving.

The brand of the router and the AP has alot to do with how this is set. so look at the manual!!!!!

I would suggest you go with equipment made by senao, or zycommax. They have APs which have up to 1000mw amplification built in, which is very powerful and can be used for far distances. However, you may need a high gain omni antenna or better still high gain sector antennae, in order to get the best signal reach. On the client end, some may not pick the signal indoors with only their wifi cards, so you may need some cheaper APs to use as CPEs, you could try some cheap linksys APs for this. Hope this helps you, as I have setup a number of such networks even in high interference areas, with desireable results.

set your access point to repetitive and look for the mac adress in your router (main).
