Maintenance & Repairs - July 2007

The dealer has had my car on and off for a month. They think it is electrical. They have replaced the body control module and it is still dying. It just stops while driving like someone pulled a plug. It will start right back up and drive for a while longer sometimes all day sometimes it dies again in a few minutes. The first time I had it in the shop it drove that way for a week then died and wouldn't start back up and I had to have it towed. I have replaced the battery and fuel filter. They say the alternator and fuel pump are not the problem. Does anyone have any other ideas I can have the dealership check? They seem to not be able to figure it out. I don't know if this is related but the car has also had problems with the windshield wipers coming on at random and I can't turn them off. So far since they replaced the body control module this hasn't happened. So they may be two different electrical module problems. Thanks for any help and ideas for solving this problem!

1996 Ford Taurus GL will only go in reverse. Is there a part on the transmission that can be replaced, or does the whole thing need to be replaced? I know they made two transmissions, but i am not sure which one it is.

I have a socket set, a 1.5 ton hydraulic jack and other basic tools, will i need anything special to replace or repair the tranny? thanks.

The car (Dodge Caravan 2006) is only 15 months old and had 13500 miles...is this normal that I need my pads and rotors replaced? I am not an agressive driver, as I always have my three kids in the car with me. I have been looking online and have been seeing that the rotors should normally last about 35-40000 miles. Any help is appreciated!!

I have a 2000 Ford Tarus with 104k miles. It's in great shape but I'm due for a radiator flush. Is the chemical flush just a sales add on to get more money?

I was backing up and it sounded like a sledge hammer hit the under side of the truck, then it quit moving and made this horrible whirring sound. I appear to still have 1st and 2nd gear in forward. How bad is this or is it possible it could be fixed.

I hooked up the first battery under the hood. The second RV battery goes on the chassis. The owner before used orange and black and I thought orange was positive. I connected the orange to the positive and zapped the battery pretty good. Still stupid on my part but the batteries don't have any charge. Did I ruin the one or both?

I sent away for as product called Rust-Bullet, and it says it will stop rust for ten years! I used as directed, even had a friend who is a pro body man prep it, used as directed, three monthes later rust back. Anyone have another product they recommend. Also, I heard that if you spray 10W-40W oil aound and under, this will prevent rust, any truth to this?

Thanks

My check engine light came on when starting up my 2002 Benz E320 earlier and I changed the inside lights(city/parking) earlier in the day. I already replaced the original bulbs and had no problems(had them in for a couple of weeks) but I ordered some different bulbs from the same company and put them in and the check engine light came on hrs later. My car is ideling worse than before but can changing out bulbs in yo car cause an electrical problem that will trigger the check engine light to come on?Ive also changed out the taillight bulbs also(they have been in for a couple of weeks also)but Im just now having problems. The bulbs I replaced the stock bulbs w/are the same wattage and factory sized replacable bulbs ready to plug and play.Any advice would be greatly appreciated.Thanx.

I recently bought a brand new 2007 Chevy Cobalt. When i got it, there was 30 miles on it, there is now 905 miles on it. When should i get my first oil change?

One can get crazy looking over the many variations of automobile oil on the shelves of auto parts store - oils ranging from extented use to high mileage oil to semi[]synthetics. What's the difference and is it all that beneficial. I own a regular car in good working order which I use to drive around town and outskirts. I've always used the standard 5W-30 oil by Pennzoil, Quaker State, or Castrol changin it every 3 thousand miles or 90 days whichever comes first. will it benefit me to use a type oil costing three times as much but claims my engine will perform better or last longer?

I have an 82 Ford F150 that I'm intersted in restoring.
It's a standard cab with an 8' bed.
I'm capable of doing most labor myself, as I am a mechanic, but I'de prefer to outsource the body work, and I'm having difficulty getting a quote: There is a dent in the passenger side door, both rear wheel wells are rusted out, as are the panels at the bottom rear of the box, and the tailgate has "pit rust".
I'm interested in what price is fair for these repairs as well as having the vehicle sanded down, reprimed, and repainted to a factory or better quality.
Also, I'de like to know about having the frame, front I-beams, and rear axle sandblasted bare, and either painted, powder coated, or "rhino-lined"

Except that, it is very clean. The mechanic said that just the cost of checking it will be more expensive than the car and the probabilities of having internal motor damage are very high. Should I just take it to the junk yard? Any other idea to get at least a few bucks?

Here's a brain melter for all you chevy guys. I have a 1990 Chevy Suburban 5.7L 4wd that constantly blows the ECM B fuse. First thing I replaced was the fuel pump relay as it only happened when the ECM is connected and the fuel pump relay was connected. Cranks but still no go. Found a burnt wire and replaced the wire that connected to the manifold. Started once let it run in park then turned it off. Started it again a few minutes later and when I shifted into reverse the fuse blew and the engine died completely. Traced all the wires from the ECM to their various places, disconnected the fuel pump power and the fuse still blows. Now it won't start at all just cranks, any ideas?

My husband dropped his wedding ring on the ground by accident when he was taking it off to take a shower and the diamond fell out of it. We looked all over and cannot find the diamond at all. I want to know if there is a place that will replace the diamond with a new one and place it inside the missing space? Is there even such a place that does that kind of thing? I live in Miami, so if anyone knows if a place down here does that kind of thing or if you know of a place in general that can fix rings can you please let me know. If I know there is a place that does this then I can try and look for someplace here. The place we bought the ring from doesn't do it.

Ok, 1989 thunderbird...3.8 fuel injected. 124,000 miles.

Now the problem(s): i would call it a "stumble" but it isnt that dramatic...its more of a "delay" when i hit the gas. It is more evident when i am NOT trying to take off fast.It also takes a few trys to get it to start a lot of the time.

I take very good care of my car. A good word would be "meticulous". There are no fault codes or error codes of any kind. And almost everything is new under the hood. I got it with 98000 miles on it with a bad head gasket, and that has been fixed. I dont know what the problem could be, so if some one could throw out some "maybe"s, i would really apreciate it!

PS, could that be the fuel pressur regulator?

Thanks everyone for your help! Here we go again. I just came back from the mechanic today and he suggeste the tune up to see if that would stop the hesitating ( plus to see if it would start in the rain). After all that and a couple of hundred bux, he says that the reason that my car keeps hesitating at speed is because something about the clutch pad is slightly worn and at speed it'll disengage and re-engage. It could even happen at slower speeds, and occasionally the car will act like it wants to take off. He says that the clutch is spinning too fast from wear and that when it re-engages, the car will act like it's ready to jump. Can someone tell me, does this sound right? It does to me but i don't want to put his kids thru Harvard either!
