We know that is what is wrong with my boyfriends car. He was told that he could rebuild it but we don't know how. Anyone know how to do this?

We know that is what it is. There is a brand new battery in it. He is the one that has to deal with it and he was told that it would only cost about $10 to rebuild it and about $150 to get a new one.

Rebuilding an alternator is also a diagnostic procedure. If it just needs new brushes or bearings that is one thing. If it needs ot have the armature rewound or the voltage regulator replaced this is quite another.

It's cheaper in the long run to buy an new alternator with a life time warranty and install it and forget about it.

Good Luck!

Parts for an alternator would probably cost more than $10. Shop around for a better price, or try a used one from a junkyard (but that is risky).
Rebuilding them is a pain, alot of hassles and might need special tools.

It would be better to buy an alternator then to try and rebuild it. To do it right, all of the parts will cost as much or more then just replacing it.

Depending on what sort of car it is, the parts may be available, or they may not. Generally, you will replace the bearings and brushes, and possibly the diode trio or regulator assembly. You will need to check with your nearest O'reilly auto parts store to see if the parts are available for that particular alternator. Also, often times you can get a remanufactured alternator for about the same cost.

It can be done, but its a major pain in the, you know. Its easier and could be cheap just to buy a rebuilt unit. Are you sure its the alternator and not the battery or the cables?
