1996 Ford Taurus GL will only go in reverse. Is there a part on the transmission that can be replaced, or does the whole thing need to be replaced? I know they made two transmissions, but i am not sure which one it is.

I have a socket set, a 1.5 ton hydraulic jack and other basic tools, will i need anything special to replace or repair the tranny? thanks.

you,ll need a good transmission jack also there a little hard to get out with out one, tool wise it doesn't actually take that many tools to do it with, but getting it out and working on it ,does require some special tools, good luck with it.,,PS you may need to replace the transmission if all you have is reverse, either that or have it re-built.

You probably need a new gear box, which I think is part of the transmission. Go to your local O'reilley's Auto Parts or Auto Zone, or you could probably call and they can tell you what you need.

Transmissions can be rebuilt and are.
It may be less expensive to trade the old for a rebuilt one.
