Maintenance & Repairs - June 2007

I am a student, so cost is what matters to me.

I have a nissan altima 1995, it has 220 k km and so far I've changed the engine ( original 33,000 km) and trani( original 77,000) because it was my fult not fixing the waterpump and engine overheated and so on

Also, I've changed the distributer, battery and starter

Is it worth just to keep with it and go along with small repairs for one more year?

if i buy another used car, i would then i have to spend money on my car to sell it, spend more money for a better car and then maybe I would have to spend repairs on that car if it hasn't been to the mechanic in a while

what do you guys think?

no water going through the hoses, overheating of the engine, causing the engine to stall, antifreeze coolant tank still full because of poor engine circulation

headlights, the engine shuts off. It will run fine, with the AC, Radio, blinkers, and even the parking lights, but as soon as I try to turn the headlight on, it kills the engine. The lights turn on, even when the engine is off, but it will not allow it to start when they are on. Any ideas any one????

my car clonk out the other day at the petrol station,it would not turn over at all,i got it going again but when i switch the lights on the dashboard lights went very dim, today i have found the rear number plate light cluster full of water,i dried and cleaned up the socket and evrything now seems fine. The car seems to start ok and the dashboard is bright again.
can a faulty light cluster cause this problem or do i need to look elsewhere?

I have a consistant vibration in the front driver's side of my 2003 SaturnSL2. Tire guy says that the wheel spins well and there is no unusual wear on the tire.

I can feel the vibration under my feet and in the steering column. It is not significant when accelerating or breaking, but gets worse when cruising on the highway (50-60mph). When I’m going about 5 miles per hour, it feels like the front driver’s side of the car goes ‘up and down’ just a bit, while rolling along.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I’d like to have some general ideas before seeing a mechanic. (Hopefully reduce the ‘getting screwed’ possibility’). So PLEASE IF YOU DON’T KNOW CARS, PLEASE DON’T ANSWER. I need good and solid advice.

I just moved away from home and my father always took care of taking my car to get the oil changed. It is time once again - so what can I expect when I take my car to one of these quick service places? What is the process? I would just like to know what to do when I get there...

I'm asking because I'm considering soliciting a friend to advertise his labor. Usually when an autos AC goes it is not because the system is bad, it's due to a leak that drains out the freon that cannot be patched without replacing the entire system ($1000 +). To have a shop recharge the freon (without fixing it) it usually costs $80. With these numbers in mind, my friend is able to refill a cars freon using a simple tool outside of the confines of an auto shop. It takes around 20 mins, and the only cost is the can of freon (usually under $15). The car's AC will work until all the freon leaks out again (depending on the leak, two weeks to ten months). If I could get my friend to use his tools and skills for profit, how much would you pay for the service? Add in any comments or advise you may have on the idea. Do you think people would find this a better option then going to a shop? What would you add to the cost if he drove to them to do the work?

I've had my Dakota almost 2 years now. It's always made a sort of whurrrrrrr sound as I accelerate first thing in the morning. I've always assumed it was just warming up. This morning, it whurrred and then cleared up real quick. About 5 minutes later, I noticed my Check Engine light was on. My oil pressure and my heat gauge are fine, battery is fine.

Any ideas? Unfortunately, I don't know much about cars.

I found a screw in my tyre, so I took it to a fast-fit place for replacement. The guy there told me that this sort of thing is very common, but I'm not so sure.

Has it happened to you?
