Sounds like the starter motor.

Probably the starter. Neutral safety switch is a possibility too. Is there a clicking sound or any sound at all when you turn the key? If there is a click it's not the safety switch.
Check the battery cables first. The stereo and dash lights might still work but the starter requires alot more power and loose cables will cause this problem.

First check is your battery. Turn your key to the "on" position, and turn on your headlights. Are they as bright as usual? If they appear dim, your battery may be too low to start the car. Get a jump-start from somebody (following the instructions in your owners manual) and take it somewhere that specializes in light automotive work (Pep Boys, Sears Automotive, etc) and they will test your battery and replace it if necessary.

If your headlights do not appear to be dim, the problem is most likely your starter or the attached starter solenoid. Thankfully, this is an inexpensive part, although if you have not done any automotive work I would reccomend having it replaced by a professional. Shouldn't take more than a half hour.

Again, many things can cause this problem. Dodgeman listed the neutral safety switch. I had the same problem some time ago. The car wouldn't start in Park, but by moving the gear shift to the neutral position, it would start. You may try that. You need to get it in and get it serviced to find the problem because you can't always push the car to start.

I would first check your battery. Make sure everything is tight and you have no corrosion on terminals. If they are corroded then clean them off with Baking Soda and water. Then apply some Vaseline on them to keep them clean and corrosion free. Make sure your battery has enough power. Take it to a sears or auto supply store they will test it for free. If you still have this problem it might be an alternator problem, they can test that for you as well, and if they are cool they will do it for free.

the neutral safety switch has went out on it that's the switch that prevents it from starting in gear, and it also will stop it from starting at all if it goes out,but it will still push start ,you need to have it replaced though you may get in a spot where you cant push it or let it roll off, also have them check the starter relay ,that could have went out,and will cause the same condition, good luck hope this helps.

many problems could b in this. too many to list. the easiest is checking spark plugs, do this if car isnt turning over at all. you can trst your spark plugs by scraping them against the head gasket. but recommended new spark plugs. another idea is a new engine starter OR you might have a shortened wire.
first thing you shoudl do though is check spark plugs. we had this problem in my brothers BMW like a '93. it would shine the lights in dashboard and head lights could turn on but car wouldnt turn over.
ooh yea another suggestion is checking the fuse box.
