I'm asking because I'm considering soliciting a friend to advertise his labor. Usually when an autos AC goes it is not because the system is bad, it's due to a leak that drains out the freon that cannot be patched without replacing the entire system ($1000 +). To have a shop recharge the freon (without fixing it) it usually costs $80. With these numbers in mind, my friend is able to refill a cars freon using a simple tool outside of the confines of an auto shop. It takes around 20 mins, and the only cost is the can of freon (usually under $15). The car's AC will work until all the freon leaks out again (depending on the leak, two weeks to ten months). If I could get my friend to use his tools and skills for profit, how much would you pay for the service? Add in any comments or advise you may have on the idea. Do you think people would find this a better option then going to a shop? What would you add to the cost if he drove to them to do the work?

It's going to be 111 today where I live. I'd give my firstborn son to get my a/c fixed. Fortunately for him, my a/c works fine ;-)

For a freon recharge I would pay 100 bucks if I went to the dealer, about 80 from some shop, and I personally wouldent trust my car to some joe who could do it himself.

Seeing as you can buy a recharge kit for about $30 at almost any auto parts place, and you can buy 134a refrigerant (which is what cars today (after the early 90's) use for $4.00 a can, I would not pay much to have it done!!!

You are better off having the leak repaired properly, but if you want to just keep adding refigerant, do it yourself!!
