car was doing good till this morning, i got in and it seemed as the engine jumped when i placed it into gear, then when i headed down the road it started off in second gear, and did not shift out. stayed in second gear no matter which foward gear i was in(auto-tranny). called the local mechanic he said a motor mount or possibly a vacuum leak could both be the problem, just needing some input here. much appreciated in advance!

I'm driving a second-hand (not sure how old - pretty beat-up though!), 4-speed VW Golf, 1.4 l (I guess) engine, and commuting 25km each way to work every day, with the occasional longer journey (100 km or so).

I've been trying to use the highest gear possible that keeps the car moving without stalling (i.e. lowest possible r.p.m.), and am using about 8.4 l (unleaded) fuel per 100 km (about 33.6 m.p.g., if I've done the conversion right).

I would like to know if there is an optimal r.p.m. value where the fuel burns most efficiently (i.e. minimising unburnt fuel emissions) while still maximising fuel efficiency (minimum fuel used against maximum distance travelled)?

If so, is there an easy way to find it, or should I just carry on doing what I've been doing?

Approximately 3 weeks ago.. I bought a 1995 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo.. I drove it to town one time and it started storming so I drove it directly home and parked it.. The next day I got up to take it back into town, it wouldn't start. OK, I had it put on a computer it showed a CODE 11 so the people at the local parts department determined that it must be a Crank Sensor. That was correct. We finally got that part eliminated. We have changed all sensors and that O2 sensor. We changed the fuel pump.. Now this is what it's doing.. First thing in the morning you can start it up and it will run perfect for about 15 to 20 minutes until I assume it gets hot. Then it starts missing backfiring and black smoke comes out the tailpipe and eventually it dies. All the plugs are black out also. What am I overlooking?

I have a 300L air tank w a 2 cyclinder air comp & electric motor.
I have no idea when the oil was last changed on the compressor and I'm in a dusty environment.
Should I replace the existing oil w/motor oil (thats all I have) or would I be better off leaving it be?

Try looking for a diagram to put the stupid thing back on and you're stuck in a place on 4th of July and find someone to put the sucker back on.

I am seaching for a perfect "10" vehicle.

I am a college student with limited budget.

I wish I could buy Japanese models like Toyota or Honda, but I do not have enough money for them.

So I would lay my eyes upon the other brands, such as Dodge or Hyundai.

Based on my own reaseach, I found Dodge Neon and Hyundai Elantra would be good choices, based on the price, quality, etc.

Well, what I credit the best is reliability.

Please tell me the followings:

1. Are Neon and Elentra good?

2. If they are, then are they reliable?

3. If they are not good, then what are their problems?

4. Is there any other good brands with decent price you recommend?

thank you, thank you

I bought a used car, took it to 2 different mechanics for inspections. 1 said it needed new brake pads now, the other said it didn't need them for a while yet. I THINK the first guy said I had 40% (but he was throwing lots of numbers around, so that might not have been it) left.
