If you are not getting spark out of the coil itself, I would start checking the continuity of wiring to the coil, if it is not getting the power to the coil it cannot produce spark, I am making the assumption that you have already checked your condensor, if you have not do so...If you have spark at your coil but not to the plugs check the rest of your ignition system, i.e. wires, distributor cap, points etc.

I own a 79 also and also owned a 78 this system is tricky but not too bad once you go through it. Either on the firewall or the inside drivers fender there is a ceramic piece this is a ballast resistor. Either it will be a double or single, the parts store will ask this. This little booger is most likely your problem. p.s. buy an extra and keep it in the glove box, they like to go out when you lest expect it........... let me know what you find, it may be a problem I haven't crossed yet.

In a vehicle that old your park issues could be from the points, or the condensor. Your pionts are located under the distributer, they look like a pair of tweezers that open and close when the distributer turns. The condensor is a small cylinder usually located on the outside of the distributer. If the points dont open or close there will be no spark.
I know the pic is of motorcycle points, but they were the best ones I could find on short notice.

Check the ballast resistor, it's most likely burnt out. It should be mounted close to the coil if it isn't mounted directly to the coil bracket. You can jump the resistor to check it, it's purpose is to cut voltage down to 6v from 12v but testing it won't hurt anything.

take the distributor cap off and turn the car over and see if the rotor is spining if not pull it and see if gear on the end is broke,if not you may have a broke timing chain,or you could have a bad pick up coil inside the distributor

with your ignition on check to see if u have 12volts on ur coil connections by using a meter or u can use a wire with a low amp fuse in-between the ends , if the fuse blows that means u do have 12volts and u might have bought a bad coil
