car was doing good till this morning, i got in and it seemed as the engine jumped when i placed it into gear, then when i headed down the road it started off in second gear, and did not shift out. stayed in second gear no matter which foward gear i was in(auto-tranny). called the local mechanic he said a motor mount or possibly a vacuum leak could both be the problem, just needing some input here. much appreciated in advance!

What has happend is that the computer has sensed a problem with the transmission. This generated a fault code which causes Limp Mode (2nd gear only). You should take the car to a transmission shop and have them scan it for codes which will help resolve the problem. Often it's something simple such as a speed sensor, but it could also be a major problem. Make sure to check your fluid level, low fluid will also provide the symptom you describe !!

If it starts in 2nd and won't shift up or down it has gone into "limp in" mode. Tha hard facts are that you have a trans problem and need to take it in to a shop, but not the one you talked to since neither a motor mount or vac leak will cause this problem.
