I only started this new job a few weeks ago, and I've become the sounding board for one coworker in particular to vent all her frustrations about the job, other coworkers, our boss, etc. So much trash talking behind their backs. It makes me uncomfortable. What's the best way to let her know it bothers me and to essentially "keep the negativity to herself" without insulting her. Mind you, I do have to continue working with her on a project and want to keep things cool. She's a lot older than me, and several positions higher than me so I need to be respectful. I need to tread lightly. Her constant complains are making me bitter on a job that I otherwise love. Any suggestions? Thank you for your help.

Here are some questions I have already made, hopefully you can think of some other good ones:

1. What is the work environment like?

2. On a scale of 1 to 10, how would you rate management's treatment of its employees?

3. What is the turnover rate of employees at this company?

4. Is there any potential for advancement within this company?

5. Are there any educational reimbursement programs for employees?

I was born in USA, but I have lived in a foreign country almost all my life. I have a solid good job in the country I live in, but I do not make as much as I need to follow my plan of studying in China. I will be out of University until March. A friend of mine, from the country I currently live in, is going to work in USA at a hotel, doing 1/4 of the work I would do and will be paid 4 times more than me and he is not an american citizen(he applied to those foreign programs that help international students get jobs in america). If I apply for a job at US, will I have to quit my other job beforehand? What is the normal pay per hour in a hotel for example? Please help as I find it hard to decide whether to apply to US or stay in the country I currently live in. Thanks.

I have been burned twice by this woman, she has left the same job twice in the past 5 yrs. both times befor she leaves, she makes sure she drags me into the managers office with a list of complaints that stand without merit, we just let her spout off and be on her merry way,it's easier. This time the manager didnt give her any satisfaction and she complained to the state, the state dismissed her complaint, what I would like to know is how do you turn the other cheek, on someone you would like to throttle?
